Had a local mechanic change a timing belt on one of my vehicles which was a alh tdi 90 hp bora with 91k from new

There was no smoke before the cam-belt change but then my customer took the car away after it was done and complained about clouds of smoke behind him and the occasional slight diesel rattle which came whenever but not often (also not excessive). car runs well still tho with no warning lights

Is it a possibility the timings slightly out? ive asked him not to drive it til it gets fixed at the weekend.

What you guys recon?

Possibly timing, possibly water pump issue or anything else that is usualy under tension that got disturbed. Potential oil seal perishing on the camshaft end as it comes out of the rocker cover?

If it's the old style pump system you can check the timing using VCDS, it does sound as though it's out.

ALH is the old style pump, and you can check the timing with VCDS.

The pump pulley isn't splined onto the pump, and is rotated slightly to adjust the timing. Checking and adjusting timing is part of the cam belt change procedure, although a main dealer managed to get mine wrong twice when I got a cam belt changed...
