Best car for family member - £8k budget

My old dad has a 2002 Nissan Primera SVE (whale) which he has owned since 2006. However, it is starting to run rough and its approaching its best before date. Apart from this, it has served him well with everything being strong and has never let him down!
He has 8k to spend and wants something that looks good, reliable, up to 4 years old and can transport 5 adult family members. We are not badge snobs so we are open to any brand.
