It seems the governments new and shiny system for taxing your car online has a flaw. We SORNed on of the cars at the beginning of the month as we didn't think we'd need to use it for a while. Now it turns out we do. Just tried to tax it online and the computer says no.

Successful transaction

As there has already been a successful transaction for this vehicle a new transaction cannot be undertaken at this time.
You will need to apply for the vehicle tax or declare SORN at a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax using the reminder (Vehicle Tax Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Certificate together with the MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee.
For vehicles registered to a Northern Ireland address you must also take an insurance certificate or cover note.

If you have an enquiry relating to the Successful Transaction please call…
Phone: 0300 123 4321 Textphone: 0300 790 6201

An advisor will be able to assist you 8.00am - 8.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am - 5.30pm on Saturday.
Well, that's all well and good except we need to be gone before both the helpline or post office opens.

So much for being able to tax the car 24/7/365.

Yes, the car was SORNed but what the hell is the point of then not allowing it to be taxed and how can they have missed this glaring bug in testing?

Have you tried calling them?

One would question why wait until you're ready to leave, but that's another question all together.

Did you even read the post? rolleyes

Helpline doesn't open until 8am, should have been gone at 7am.

Why was it left to the last minute? Unexpected st happens from time to time.

The whole new system was sold to us tax payers as being able to tax our cars online 24/7/365. They neglected to mention there are exceptions/bugs/whatever that may prevent this. I'm pissed off so having a moan, ok?

You weren't foolish enough to really believe that the government weren't going to fk it up in more ways than you can comprehend?!

If it's such an emergency, why not forget the tax for the first hour or so? If you're really concerned, print the page on the website and take it with you. If you get a tug, explain the issue.

Perhaps I was overly optimistic after applying for new passport online and getting delivered 4 days later.

Most law enforcement is by camera, so the first I'd know about whether I'd been caught would be when the fine came through the post. And given that it's an absolute offence, I can't see that excuse cutting any slack whatsoever.

Anyway, a conversation with their helpline has been most enlightening. If you SORN your car online you CANNOT then tax it online until 5 days later - the system just won't allow it before then, not even if you phone them! Not only that, but the Post Office isn't even using the same system, so they can tax it.

To this I say: what the juddering fk? The new online system is clearly unfit for purpose.
