Yes, I know, buy which you like etc but which of the following will hold their value best? Don't include running costs just simply on value appreciation/depreciation.

Think of all the following for around £18k (again, some of the following would be good for £18k, some poorer examples).

E60 m5
M6
Porsche 997
Audi rs4
Bmw e92 m3
Mercedes clk 63

I'd have said m5 may hold its value/appreciate best, then m6, rs4 and clk63 similar and then 997 and finally the e92 which should still depreciate a bit.

Anyone disagree?

They already have in the past year?

V10 500bhp plus, last of the big na engines.

Running costs high, yes, but you still think they will come down. How much cheaper can a 500bhp bmw get? E39s on way up too.

I think all of those are going to go down before they go up.

All of those options will keep depreciating heavily I would say...

Your best option of those will be the 997 a decent 996 is about £12k now and they are seen as being st so can't see a 997 dropping much further than the 20k they are at now

£18k and want something newish that holds money best option would be a Mk2 Focus RS they have been £18k for 3 years now!

Sports saloons always struggle to hold their value. Try to name one in that last fifty years - they are few and far between. (What would be the profile of the buyer?)

I think the 997 will lose money slower than the others, BUT it will still lose it at a fast rate.all the way down to £10K

I can't see a 997 going down to £10k myself think even in 2/3 years time a decent one will be at least £15k

Yeah, ~15k would be my guess for where a good 997 Carrera levels out.

If these cars were on-offs and never replaced by newer versions then they would all be classics, no doubt about it.
But they will be viewed in the context of what followed, so it is not so easy to pick the 'winners' in the depreciation stakes.

Lotus Carlton?
E39 m5 on the up, e36 saloon on the up but yeah I get your point.

Good point.

Surely though guys an m6 can't drop to say £10k, can it?

Surely an rs4 can never get to £10k, can it?

How can a 997 get much cheaper, even a thrashed to pieces 996 with poor looks and poor interior is not much less than £10k so a 997 for £18k can't get much cheaper?

I could be wrong but I'm not seeing any of the cars ive listed as dropping much.

I thought m5 as its last of na v10 in an m car, prob never have a big an engine again, 200mph, 507bhp, good badge, practical, good looks (that version of 5 series is well liked).

Rs4s are turning a corner, aren't they?

If a 997 gets to £10k what would a similar 996 be worth? More or less?

M5/M6 have horrific running costs hence why they are dropping like a stone I can see £10k being realistic for either in 2/3 years time especially the M5.

997 as said wont go far at all

RS4 I can see dropping to £10k as well as its a car that always get replaced and for me is not as special as the old bi-turbo model so can see it falling below that given enough time. The S4 of that shape can be picked up for £5k now

Never said that lol, it is well liked though. E39 was well liked but again e39 m5s are going up in value.

I don't think any of them will appreciate, especially in the short to mid term but i expect the 997 would depreciate the least

Agree on running costs but so do tvrs and they're cimbing. So do ferraris and they're climbing (old ones).

They're a very different kind of car. There are plenty of people who want old sports cars with high running costs; I don't think there are as many people who want old barges with high running costs.
