People who insist on saying they have a "Mercedes E220 AMG Sport" or "BMW 520 M Sport"... Why cant they just accept that they drive a 2 litre diesel, sensible, everyday car? There is nothing "sporty" about a 2 litre diesel in a 2 ton car. The reason you bought a 2 litre diesel is because you care about economy and petrol prices, rather driving fast and having an interesting car.

No amount of stty side skirts, bumper trim and badges is going to make it any different. SO please, next time someone asks you what you drive just say "the bottom of the range 5 series with some additional badges on it".

I refer to mine as a 125i M Sport sometimes. Mainly as that's what's written on the V5.

I didn't piss on his chips.

Being British I said that's great, it's a really nice car sir... Bet it goes well etc.

Then I came home to moan about it on the internet.

Haha climb down from your high horse. Realistically, what difference does it make to you how someone describes their car? You're choosing to get annoyed, just let it go.

They probably call it that because that is what it is called..

You probably wouldn't like it if some people called you by a different name, or just changed your name completely to 'annoying ' or similar?

Surely within the past few years, M/AMG Sport have now become a recognised trim level. The manufacturers have recognised the halo effect of those top models and are capitalising on it by releasing those trim levels that sit underneath the top vehicles.

Things have moved on since the days of badges being bought from Halfords / Ebay and being stuck on willy nilly.

People need to boast about the shiny new things they have and sound impressive to people they don't care about so they can get the approval they crave and make themselves feel better than everyone else. Especially the ones that say they don't do things for the approval of others.

A brief monent of happiness in their otherwise boring, drone-like lives.

If someone namedropped the full title of the car in an actual conversation I'd be inclined never to engage them in conversation again to be honest. Why not just say you've got a 1/3/5-series, etc and have done with it?

That is the British way.

Definitely, and it's not the past few years either. E30 BMWs had 320iS/318iS models, standard engines, sporty suspension, seats etc. E39 5 series have sport models, with lots of M badges on them, firmer suspension set up, bodykits etc. There's loads of examples across loads of different manufacturers, not just BMW and Merc.

My none car mates were surprised when I had failed to mention my A4 was a S-Line I think people generally believe they are a lot faster or something...

Most were surprised when I pointed out the fact my 15yr shed of a golf was significantly faster!

specifying trim level makes you sound like a bit of a knob... and i'm fairly sure folk wouldn't mentioned it if the trim level was not the aforementioned

I do find it odd when people tack on "M Sport"/"AMG"/"S-Line" onto the end of their car name when they're posting for help online e.g. "what oil for my 118d M-Sport?". They go to the effort of tacking it on the end when it makes no difference whatsoever to the answer.

I can accept that it's a trim level, but rarely do you get the same with other makes. If someone asks the same question about a Focus they say it's a 2.0 TDCi rather than a Titanium Navigator ECOnetic, for example.

Maybe it's something to do with the way the cars are marketed by brands. People who have less than a passing interest in cars will hear it adverised, or described by a salesman, as a 3 series M Sport and think this is how it should be described.

It's probably always been done, particularly if someone takes interest/pride in what they drive, can imagine someone telling me in the past that they own a Fiesta Ghia / Golf GTI but might not mention it if it was a popular plus / CL.

Also, they may not know what information is relevant with regards to oil. '118' on its own probably isn't enough information, but '1 Series diesel' may be enough - who cares about the engine capacity in a diesel 1 series because, well, they now only sell one engine.

That is true. And ironically, I owned a 118d M-Sport a few years ago laugh
