Had to call in at the parts dept at my local FoMoCo dealer (Tropical Ford in Orlando FL).
Aside from having about 20 new Mustang 5.0s (all red for some strange reason) - this was lurking in the service reception area…

Behold, a rather tidy 1970 440 R/T Challenger.

and the back story….

Granted, it's not numbers matching, nor is it complete, but $40k for a big-block Challenger in this good nick, seems to be quite reasonable.

These pesky things were everywhere…

Some seriously nice cars there - Can't wait to get out to the US in December and see the new Mustang in the flesh (Father in law works at Ford - hoping to blag one as a hire car!)

Very nice, one of my Grail cars.

The new mustang I was pretty unenthused by. Not a bad steer, just didn't click with it. How they managed to make a 425bhp v8 sound so dull in the cabin amazed me.

Wikipedia said:
The performance model was the R/T (Road/Track), with a 383 cu in (6.28 L) "Magnum" V8, rated at 335 bhp (249.8 kW); 300 bhp (223.7 kW) for 1971, due to a drop in compression. The standard transmission was a 3-speed manual.
Optional R/T engines were the 375 bhp (279.6 kW) 440 cu in (7.2 L) Magnum, the 390 bhp (290.8 kW) 440 CID Six-Pack and the 425 bhp (316.9 kW) 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi.
R/T stands for Road/Track then. A couple more powerful engines in the range too.

$39,995, that seems fairly reasonable, was expecting seventy or more, looks utterly stunning, the new Mustang doesn't look bad either.

So had someone part exchanged it for a new Mustang or something or were they just using the Ford dealer as a convenient place to sell it?

I would have a very great deal of difficulty in buying a brand new mustang from that dealership

Sadly no - though I do have a Challenger on order (supposed to be delivered this month, but now looking more like Christmas).
I do suspect that it might be a good way of turning $40k into 50 or more over a few years by mothballing it. That did kind of cross my mind, but I don't have anywhere to keep it out of the elements and hermetically sealed.

Not sure - I suspect it might belong to one of the employees - Ford dealers don't sell on consignment and if they had taken it as a p/x I'd have thought it would have been in the showroom.

Nor would I (having had some warranty service issues with them, concerning my Mustang) - what's your beef with them?

Seems odd that he's lost interest in it when it's 90% done and nearly ready to go, though I suppose actually doing it up is the main part of the fun. Probably either a child or house expense has come along or his other half has decreed it must go.
