I will be away for one Month over Xmas/New year.

I have a Mercedes SL that is perfect for the task due to it having two Batteries (the starter one and the electronics one), however I live in the Pennines and have to get to Manchester Airport.

At this time of the year the snow can be a major airport inconvenience so the SL may not get me there and even if it does it may not get me home.

So the second option is to take the wife's X1 with 4x4, the only problem is that the battery may go flat after 2-3 weeks, I have considered....

Taking the SL and chancing the Snow.

Getting a Taxi.

Taking the X1...With a fully charged spare Battery in the boot with Jump Leads....or what about a Solar Charger ???

I would appreciate any experience and advise.

If it's a BMW X1 you're talking about standing for a month it should start up fine. The battery will be newish and the time spent cranking should be a minimum. Take some jump leads but I doubt you'll need them.

I spent 5 weeks in Spain recently when I got back my 320d that had been standing unused for the whole time started immediately, I didn't take any precautions because I only intended on going away for a week.

I reckon it'll be fine even in the cold.

big risk modern cars hate low batteries, and can cause issues if flat.

get the train.

X1 will be fine after a month (assuming battery is in good condition). I also have never seen an airport car park where they didn't have a portable jumpstarter in the office as starting issues happen all the time.

It'll be fine I'd have thought...

If you're worried, what about a solar battery maintainer?

Yes it is the BMW X1 X-Drive (2011 and it also has snow/winter tyres fitted)

So whatever the weather it will get us home.

The only question is will it start after 4 weeks, would a £40.00 Solar Charger work? or what about buying a second battery?

I live in Southampton, anything beyond Oxford might as well be the frozen North from Game Of Thrones...

If the car doesn't start then either the car park will get you going or your breakdown cover will sort you out. You may lose 30-60 minutes of your life, but it sounds like you'll spend longer than that trying to avoid the problem.

Whichever time of year depends which car I have but in total they spend about 9 months per year sat in airports.
My Tuscan is always flat after three weeks. The car park used to have a jump start service but got fed up of me. smile
My MB CLS is now 4 weeks in with two more weeks to go before I get to it and I am fully confident it will start. (famous last words).

I would be worried if the X1 didn't start after being left for 4 weeks - especially because it'll get a good run before it's left at the airport.

I'm just chuckling at the thought of this snow that's going to leave the roads impassible, yet not even put a light sprinkling over the windscreen...

Thank you all for the very helpful input.

Thank you very much to the MAN Car Parks employee for the PM....

"Go downstairs to the Meet and Greet office and ask them for assistance or press the help button on one of the pay machines. We're quite a helpful bunch. We have an AA service 7 days a week, office hours and out of these hours we have a forecourts service that is extremely efficient. Both free of charge if parking in an official Manchester Airport car park"

This has really reassured me and I hope it helps others too.

I'd take the SL. There was hardly any snow last year, and if you want peace of mind buy some snow socks. For a RWD car they suggest four but a pair on the rear wheels saw me all right.

Been there and done that!!!

Just hire a taxi firm local to you, most do airport run deals which will probably be cheaper than parking the car up for a month with all the accompanied worries about the car not starting, been stolen, dented, rusting away, thoroughly cold and damp, etc, plus you may well be knackered when you return home from your flight, so the last thing on your mind will be driving home in possibly colder icy snowy weather!

More so if you are flying long-distance and/or to a hotter climate I would highly recommend you book a taxi airport run. You give them the flight number and landing date and time and they check in realtime for the ETA and collect you outside the airport terminal.

Of course it will start, this is a complete non issue. My 530i started first time once after 2 months...

My E46 320d started once after 2 weeks but the dashboard was full of errors. Not sure that after 2 months it would have started at all.

You could probably leave the X1 there for 3 months and still not worry about starting problems.

I left a 320d sat in long stay parking for 2 months and it started without a second thought.

I would understand the caution if you were driving an old shed but that car will have no issues.

I wouldn't take that for granted. All airport staff are now trained to treat airport users with polite contempt.
