Hi,

Whilst giving the Fiancee's car the once over today I noticed that her tyre's had some very obvious and deep cracks in them as if they were old or had been sat for some time. However, upon checking the receipt these tyre's were only put on 9 months ago covering a little over 10k in that time. They have plenty of tread left and the pressure's are where they should be. (Checked fairly often and never lost pressure).

The age on the tyre according to the sidewall information is 0607 = Feb 2007 meaning that these tyres were 7 years old when put on the car.

Is this normal? - The cracking certainly isn't and is far from safe!

The Pirelli PZeros were cracking on our XF at 12 months old, also experienced a rear tyre blow out on the same car. I wouldn't touch Pirelli with a barge pole now after my recent experience with them.

Up to 6 years old is what most vehicle manufacturers seem to think is acceptable.

Are you sure that is the date code - have a look just to check there isn't another 4 digit code as it does seem very old to have been sold?

Not a great surprise for tyres that old. No way should such old tyres have been supplied so recently, though.

If you're going to raise it with the supplier, then first you've got to prove that those are the tyres you were sold...

According to this link...

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.js...

The British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) recommended practice issued June, 2001, states "BRMA members strongly recommend that unused tyres should not be put into service if they are over six years old and that all tyres should be replaced ten years from the date of their manufacture."

I am certainly going to take it up with them. I have the receipt with the tyre's make, date and fitters details on it. The car was actually passed to my Fiancee from her Mum who has been going to the same tyre place for years.

Also, 2x Continental Tyres fitted = £365.45. It's a bloody Ford KA with 14inch 165/60/H14!!

Picture just taken but as it's dark I couldn't really see what I was doing.

£365.45?! bloody hell! Someone's been diddled, the tyres themselves are only £54 a corner.

Have experienced this myself.

Q - Does the supplier of these tyres keep stock out side?

A supplier local to me habitually drag racks of tyres outside their workshop to create space. Some time ago I purchased a set of tyres, and within a few weeks they had developed cracks along the side walls. Tread was fine, and they tyres were not that old in manufacturing terms.

Heat and UV do tyres little good, so long hot summers outside, both on racks and actually on the car maybe the cause.

Just a thought.

Jesus Christ! Cost me the same amount for FOUR Bridgestone Potenzas in 205/50/16. Granted that's mates rates, but she still got shafted!

With such a reputable and honest supplier, you should have no problems at all... <pulls up comfy chair, popcorn>

I agree with the others here who say that you've been ripped off big time and also supplied tyres which are too old to have been passed off as 'new', but I'll add that the cracking looks superficial to me and wouldn't necessarily concern me. The tyres are old though, so think about getting a new pair put on.

Are you absolutely certain that the new tyres didn't go on the other end of the car?

Tyre dealers should not be selling stock over 5 years old as new.

Most wholesalers will mark down a tyre after 6 months, at 2 years they're really old stock.

Cost me less than that for 225/40/18s (per pair)! It's an incredible scam charging that sort of money, they definitely saw her coming.

That's crazy! We paid that for 4x big yoko all terrain tyres for our CRV!

I just put a tyre on the C1 and it was £40 for a bridgestone delivered from camskill, then £10 cash to have someone fit it.

100%. These questionable tyres are on the rear of the car and the fronts are Falkens which I have a separate receipt for.

Spend £100 on two new tyres and never use the old supplier again.

I'd contact them about the rip off prices and age of the tyres and ask them to do something. I wouldn't expect anything from them but worth a try.
