Get it sorted!

I'm lucky to be typing this.

This morning, less than 5 minutes after getting off of the A1M, i had my OSF ball joint sheer.

2 weeks ago, i noticed a slight creaking noise when steering. I immediately thought ball joint, and asked my friendly mechanic to check it out for me; "ball joint's fine mate, the steering rack is showing its age, sort it in the next 6 months, no bother". Great, thinks i, nothing dangerous, and i have a few months to sort it.

Fast forward to today, creaking isn't noticeably worse than when i first noticed it, normal morning commute (M25, A1M), pull up at the depot, *bang*.

OSF wheel is cocking out like a dog taking a leak, ball joint sheered.

Luckily, as i was quite literally rolling to a stop, it hasn't damaged anything else and was fixed where it lay slumped.

Moral of the story is, maintain your bloody car, and if you think that creaking noise is in fact an accident waiting to happen, investigate and replace parts until the noise is gone!

I'm now annoyed that i don't want to use my trusted, honest, skilled mechanic, because he missed a potentially deadly fault, that i specifically asked him to investigate.

Honest mistake on his part? I know it may seem as if he is just trying to sell me a steering rack, but he never puts any pressure on you to use his services, unlike other garages that would of just replaced the rack, billed me, and then still had to replace the ball joint.

I'm not really sure where this is going, i just wanted to throw a little warning out there.

Take care folks.

To be fair to the mechanic, if he lifted that corner to look, the developing crack would have been especially invisible with the weight off and the usual crud all over.

I ignored a tapping noise under load, then the flex disc (dougnut thingy connects the gearbox to the prop) fail in a spectacular and noisy fashion @ 80mph while dashing for the channel tunnel.

Lesson learned.

Good reminder thanks OP thumbup

I've learnt (As the driver of a 54 year old Land Rover and owner of a 40 year old Land Rover) that the owners of older cars are expert at the game "Name That Noise!" and tend to know what's making which noises. New ones are obvious and hunted down with extreme prejudice.
