According to an advert on local radio by a main dealer one of the worlds most famous car manufacturers is.....

Audi.

Apparently.

Whilst I would agree they are well known, I can't agree they are one of the most famous. Surely that title would be better suited to Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lamborghini etc.

Your thoughts?

"one of" is a pretty useful statement, I'd imagine.

I'd have thought either Ferrari or Ford, too. VW would certainly be above Audi as a brand, and Toyota are probably more famous in the East where most of the population live.

I'd say the most famous would be Ford, Toyota, VW, etc.

Audi are probably in the top 20; whether that makes them "one of the most..." is a matter of semantics, I suppose.

My first thought was General Motors, then maybe Ford and after that fiat/Ferrari.

Not Audi, not by a long way.

I would have though Land Rover would be one of the most recognisable cars, therefore famous.

however if we are saying truly world wide

I would think globally it would be Toyota. By a very big distance.

I'd suggest that brand recognition amongst Joe Average would have Audi WAAAAAAAY ahead of "General Motors".

In some areas of the world. GM are responsible for making more cars (and more brands) and this topic is titled "famous car manufacturers" not brand.

What is nice is that no French manufacturer popped into my head. Auto disregard going on.

<shrug> Fine.

So you reckon GM would be ahead of VAG? I'm less sure...

I think a few of you folks are missing the point. The majority of the public aren't petrolheads. To them, a white or black 64-plate Audi A5 2.0 TDi S-line is as good as cars get.

Ask people walking down the high street if they know what General Motors is. At least half won't have a clue, and that's being conservative. Ask the same people to name three different models Maserati make and they'll probably answer, "hmm, isn't that a poor man's Ferrari car?"

Ask the general public what they think the most popular/famous manufacturers are and I'd be willing to bet you'd get a response of Audi (A5), BMW (1er/3er), Range Rover, Vauxhall (Corsa) and Nissan (Juke). Non-PH folks work in strange ways.

They are one of the most famous, because lots of people won't have heard of:

Mahindra
Geely
Dong Feng
Fisker
Chery
Qoros

...and many more.

There are so many car manufacturers that the general population have never heard of. Audi is so mainstream that I think it's right up there as one of the most famous.

...and a reasonable swathe will tell you Ford & Vauxhall are British, not like that foreign Opel rubbish...
