RULES

1. It has to list under 10k.
2. It has to be the cheapest model made by that manufacturer e.g. you might be able to get a Fiesta for less than 10k but the Ka is cheaper, so if you went for a Ford, you would have to choose the Ka.

I have quite a liking for basic, economical transport. I think the low power and lack of luxuries like electric windows and AC remind me of my early days of motoring. We have two larger cars now, as we have two small children but my wife used to have a Fiat 500 1.2 Pop, which was a fantastic little car. However, the EU6 1.2 isn't supposed to be as good, the diesel is crap and the Twinair is too expensive and technically the Panda is cheaper, so I can't go with one of those.

I think I'll go for one of these:

because it's like a Fiat 500 but suitable for men or one of these:

Haven't seen any road tests yet, so don't know if it is as fun as it sounds but RE and RWD sounds promising. I usually dislike Renaults, as my father had a 21 in the early 90s and it was the worst car he has ever owned and a friend broke three Laguna diesels within the space of 2 years but now Renault have done a Fiat and decided to concentrate on small cars, I quite like their range. The new Clio (Renaultsport excepted) looks good and the Megane Renaultsport would probably be my hot hatch of choice, although it is rather expensive.

I would happily drive an Up or Twingo as a DD if it meant that I could have something really tasty in the garage for the weekend and longer journeys. I wonder whether it will be available in French Racing Blue with white racing stripes? (would look good nestled up next to a Speed Blue GT3!

What basic new car would you choose for less than 10k?

Why do you have to have the worst model (ie - Ka), even if a better model (Fiesta) is available and in budget?

Strange criteria IMO.

Because then you're not picking the cheapest option!

So what you mean is, from which manufacturer would you buy the bottom of the range model, as long as that model is under £10k?

Cos frankly, I think I'd rather have the Fiesta.

Exactly! OK, in this case, I'll let you have the Fiesta if that makes you happy. How bourgeois! wink

Fiat Panda POP 1.2. £9095 for a funky-looking little car with loads of practicality. Sold!

Exactly.

And why should I be forced to buy, say an Ethiopian spec Dacia Sandero for £5,995, instead of a top-spec Sandero Stepway for £9,995.

Assuming you have £10k to spend on a new car, you should spend exactly that (or less if you want), on any new car that is available for that price.

So you could get a Fiesta Zetec 1.25 82ps from DTD for £9741, for example. Or a Fiat 500 1.2 Pop (which is proper poverty spec, with no air con or alloys) for AutoEbid for £9678.

Obviously I just went by the manufacturer's RRP. I'm sure a Panda with more spec could be found on DtD or equivalent. Maybe metallic paint or alloys would be nice...

OK, imagine you're buying it for your daugther then. Does the base-spec Dacia Sandero for 5995 sound better now? smile
