I've always wanted to drive one and maybe one day have one.

Does anyone have one? If so what are they like? Love to see some off-roading pictures.

No but my Uncle had had a couple! Both 1970's and very agricultural but then that was what he needed on a hill farm. He did general tractor work with them but I can remember him moaning about the spare parts cost. I think the unimog has moved on considerably since then and a relatively modern one will be well out my Uncles budget now!

Unimog is a proper road-going industrial tractor. I was involved in a business selling them for many years. Expensive to buy, expensive to run and rudimentary to drive.

The target market is essentially electricity and water companies who need a cross-country lorry to access power lines and pipelines. It's almost a military vehicle.

Insane for private ownership.

Not all of them, I suspect, there's one dumped on a side road near me this evening after they've tried and failed to fix it. frown

Umm, don't think they're as expensive to buy and run as you think? Assuming you're happy to get your own spanners out every now and again...

Drop my PH mate normalbloke a line about them if you're serious.

He ran a Mog 1000 for a few years, as a toy, and often as a daily driver - doing lots of mods on the way too, like a turbo conversion, and the addition of lots of hydraulic toys too. It didn't break his bank as far as I know either...

I had a Corgi model of one ( really cool soft suspension)when I was 6 and David Mitchell nicked it off me at school. Because he wore calipers on his legs the teachers wouldn't believe me and I didn't want to punch him because of his disability.

I've just had a quick look at the adverts , refreshing honest descriptions including some terms I've never read in adverts before.

Rusty but repairable.

Very loud horn

In working order but scruffy.

Cab floor rusty

Cosmetically shabby.

It all made me smile , but also got me thinking they'd be straight folk to deal with.

Must admit I chuckled at the camper advert which announced " working gears".

Errr does that mean that all the others have dodgy transmissions then?

Another term for a crawler box?

Got one at my work (tree surgery). Never driven it myself but nobody likes it, electrics are knackered and loads and loads of rust.

Had one of these a few yrs back, a Russian built Zil.

Bonkers, utter utter bonkers, 6 wheel drive, self inflating tyres from the cab, lots of gears and knobs to play with.

It was petrol which was a bit of a downside.

You may be correct as in the next breath they talk about holding gears to check descent speeds.

Mind you if I had the money would be seriously tempted by the BAE SD Brazos 4x4 as a base chassis. Only a pipe dream sadly.
