Newbie Petrol Head
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Andy, a friend of mine, is 27 yrs old and has been driving for 1 year is an upcoming petrol head. he is as keen as mustard.
Over the last week I have been posting questions for him to research and he is doing well.
Examples are;
what makes a car an evo car
why most engines are 500cc per cylinder.
what did we have before electronic ignition.
why the E30 M3 is so legendary.
types of crank.
types of differential
What advice and or questions would you put to him to help him on his journey?
Cheers
Steve

Off the top of my head:
Why is diesel better than petrol
Merging in turn
Cadence braking and declutching
Winter v summer tyres
Mother and child parking spaces
Why are German cars the best
Use of fog lights and DRL's
Why speeding is dangerous
Avoidance of parking fines
Leasing/HP v buying outright

Why 9 times out of 10 when people crash somehow there is diesel spill involved.
Why there is more to life than MPG.
Why do people think diesels are fast when all they really feel is some torque for 500rpm
Why Vtec engines have a perfectly adequate amount of torque for it's capacity but people still think they have no torque
The difference between doing maintenance and having an unreliable car.
Why depreciation is not a recognised cost.
Why buying a new car that does 5 mpg more than your existing car to "save money" is lying to yourself.
Should keep him occupied...

How Much Of A Petrolhead Are You Really? 70 Per Cent Means You're Doing Well
Here's another quiz to see how you rank against your petrolhead peers. This time, you'll be tested on the 'basics' of car mechanics, including bleeding your brakes and spark plug gap. If you don't know the answer, rely on your petrolhead logic. Above 70 per cent means you're doing well!

Off the top of my head:
Why is diesel better than petrol- More torque, more economical, longer lasting, lower insurance, lower tax, holds value for longer
Merging in turn-Dont know
Cadence braking and de-clutching-don't know
Winter v summer tires-dunno
Mother and child parking spaces-Not fair
Why are German cars the best-Because they are German and Germans the best, they last a long time and have the best image, name for reliability & quality (not so sure about the newer ones)
Use of fog lights and DRL's-fog lights are great if no-ones on the road if you cant see well, great for fog (obvs) and DRL'S are good because the cars are easier to spot
Why speeding is dangerous- Its the sudden stop that becomes the real problem
Avoidance of parking fines- Buy the book (protect your licence) plenty of get out ways
Leasing/HP v buying outright- Buying outright is better because you owe no debt
There you go that's what i recon Why is diesel better than petrol- More torque, more economical, longer lasting, lower insurance, lower tax, holds value for longer
