Thoughts on making rubber necking against the law, and possibly fining people that do it. Maybe even points on their licences too.

How?...introduce a fine for travelling less than an indicated minimum speed ie; 30mph pass the RTC etc.

Eg.. Everytime there is an RTC on an M-way or dual carriage way, a traffic officer pulls up and films drivers to make sure they adhere to a minimum speed.

I know this sounds a bit tongue in cheek.

Just something that popped into my head yesterday night as I was passing a 3 car shunt over the next carriageway whilst being held up by rubbing neckings chiefs.

haha, so you were one of the rubberneckers causing the people behind you to slow down. Volunteering yourself for points, incredible. The only way of stopping it is for all motorways to have approx 4ft high central reservations (prob declined due to cost).

How do you know it was a three car shunt if you weren't rubber necking?

It probably is. How can you be paying "Due care and attention" if you have to slow so much to feel safe because your gorping at the other carriage way.

HOWEVER, can you imagine the complaints? People get stropy enough at the moment being stopped. Have you seen the idiots on these police TV programs "Why don't you go an arrest someone robbing a granny! All I was doing was reading the paper and only slightly over the speed limit!"

All it needs is for the odd one or two people to tap the brakes on the way past the scene of the accident (perhaps the damaged car looks like their sons or daughters car), and all the traffic behind starts bunching up. 99% of people aren't rubber neckers, but are forced to slow down due to all the vehicles in front.

Penalising people wouldn't work, as everyone is slowed down by the car in front.

Seems like a lot of tunnel vision affecting most of the posters in this thread - how can you not be aware of the number of vehicles around you? Don't you have peripheral vision? Do you have to look directly at every object in your field of view to understand what it is?

I think it is human nature to look at stuff, but there is a difference between a glance and registering there has been an accident and slowing down to see if you can see any good gore, or getting a bloody camera phone out.

So I am on a dual carriageway vehicles in both lanes in front of me slow down due to an accident on the other carriageway are you seriously suggesting that everybody else that has to slow down gets fined? How would you make the call that driver x slowed down sufficiently but driver Y didn't?

Car smashes into central reservation If I am coming the other way I will slow down, not to "rubberneck" but there may well be debris on my carriageway or a disorientated driver may climb over the barrier to get away from the traffic only to end up on my carriageway. If the OP had his way I could get fined for this.

Well said!

I can see a collision on the opposite carriageway without having to move my head, and most importantly, without bloody braking!!

Also the OP was stuck behind the rubber neckers slowing him down so he could see the accident ahead. So many people on here are quick to be knobbers ...

What a stupid thing to say. What if there is debris everywhere and you can't do more than 30. You should work for the Government!

This.

How else would of I been able to see the 3 car shunt? obviously because of people slowing down to see shunt on he other carriage way.

I understand your point. I should of said that the speed limit should be enforced depending on conditions etc.

In events where there are minor shunts ie no injuries etc, something should be done. In my opinion.

I think this is legislating against human nature, it would like trying to police men looking at attractive women. Agreed it's flipping annoying, but it's not a law you could effectively police.
