...replace it with?

I've been sat, bored, thinking about what car is out there that does everything my current car does, and I cannot think of anything for the same value (circa £6k) that is;

1) as quick
2) as nice
3) as entertaining
4) has the same comforts

Sure I could down grade, or upgrade in terms of a barge, but I'm not sure I'd find an automatic Jaguar XJR as entertaining as my M5.

I'm not a hot hatch kind of guy, prefer saloon's or larger hatch backs, definitely not estates or "tourers".

So you people of PH land, what would you get that was either as good, or better, if you sold your car today?

Done it. Sold my Porsche 996 C4S last minute month. Bought a Rolex Deepsea and currently perusing the classifieds for a V10 Audi S6 or S8.

I hope the incredibly faint noise you might be able to hear from your rolex keeps you up at night

Nice! The V10 S8 looks quite a nice car, just seems a little under powered for its size? 450bhp and 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds (I appreciate an automatic, 4x4 luxobarge isnt going to be the quickest thing off the mark!) but having seen Youtube video's of them, their mid-range doesn't seem to offer much?

But V10 biggrin

Long story. I've had an S6 a couple of years ago and always pined after it after I got rid of it. Went through a Range Rover Vogue and the Porsche. Want to get back into an Audi now. Might still get an S6 although it'll have to be in a different colour than my old one as people will think I'm mental.

Mine had the Milltek non res exhaust too. Sounded awesome.

The S8 "looks" better to me, looks well proportioned. I think it does more than my M5 does, though twice the price, and a bit slower to 100, though I guess does it really matter? V10 biggrin

Different horses for different courses though really, and the S6 to me doesn't look a bad car, and its still a V10, and I don't go in for the "you only got an S6 because you couldn't afford an RS6" bks. Sure I personally cannot afford an E60 M5, but even if I could, I still think I'd of chosen the E39.

The 5.2 FSI does sound good with an exhaust! You dont expect a big luxobarge to sound like that hehe

I'm not after idea's, I'm just interested in what people would get. I use my M5 as my daily, it does luxobarging and toy quite well. Plus I work most Sundays frown

I do like a good luxobarge though!

To be fair, I hardly ever use my rear seats and being a relatively youthful 35, an R32 or S3 would suit me but I just love daft saloons with stupidly big engines. There's an S8 going through auction that I'll keep an eye on. I love the standard spec on those, air suspension, rear camera, advanced key. Then there's the options B&O, soft close doors, solar sunroof...

My watch box is a Lidl tea caddy.

The value of my car is sub-1k so if I wasn't allowed to put more money in I'd be desperately trying to find another car which isn't a complete shed, any car so long as it isn't ruined, barried, full of rust etc etc. On balance I'd much rather keep my car and enjoy it for it's material value, forgetting about it's financial value!

Likewise, I have no kids, I'm 33, and the last time my rear seats were used for passengers was summer. But like you I like saloon cars, and rear seats are being used this weekend to transport the in-laws to my parents.

Its still posh hehe

That is a good point well made. I need to spend £2k-£3k on mine over winter on various sensors etc, but whats to say if I sold it for £6k today, that the car I buy isn't full of issues that requires a further £3k spending? Sometimes better the devil you know!

You will forget to put it in 1 day and you'll leave it on your bedside tables a few inches from your ear, touching a glass which amplifies the sound, and you'll hear it, and for the rest of your life you will then hear it, even though you probably can't actually hear it most of the time, you can never get the sound out of your head

The poor old thing has been sat on the drive lifeless for the past 30 weeks whilst I relocated to work in Thailand. In a big rush I did no decommissioning work on it whatsoever, not even a wash. It makes me sad thinging about it. I imagine the battery is now paperweight. I hope no water has gotten into the interior.

The sensible thing to do would have been to flog it before I left. Now that it's on a SORN I guess the only way to get rid of it would be for the scrap man to take it away.

However, I'm not sensible. I bought that car because I like it, and for me there would be no easy way to replace it. I've nurtured it to health and it has rewarded me with two years of almost completely faultless service. It's a great car still, and when I get back to the UK I will not be having it taken away, but I will be recommissioning it once again, same as I did when I found it underused and underappreciated in West London. I might even tidy up the cosmetics a bit, so that they're as good as the mechanicals...

Probably an Insight or a Prius. Though the value of my Jaguar is less than £2000 so it would merely dent the buy in on the hybrid. But I really like the look of the current Insight. Or perhaps a CRZ would do. Well, I'd either want a hybrid or another Jaguar XJ.

If I sold my CG125 (which I will do next year) I'll replace it with a Suzuki SV650S.

Would be a hard one to replace my Cerbera, I think I would need double its value to make me change to a AM v8 vantage, it will be slower but more refined and on a par running costs I imagin.

My MG is leaking like a bh and I am getting close to calling a day with it, sadly in no position to buy anything else more expensive so if it were to go I would probably get something like a Fiesta to potter around in frown

Same again, so no point really - as a station car it's perfect for my purposes. The only thing that has crossed my mind is an EV, but I'd be funding a difference to no great purpose.

Often pondered this.

If I did chop my M5 in I'd buy (..dons flame suit..) a VW Phaeton....

...but since I'm considering getting an additional car anyway I'd buy an Aston V8V as well (early 4.3 to keep the purchase price sort of sensible..£30k?) to do what the M5 does though possibly not as well. The Aston wins because it's so bloody beautiful and can be forgiven a few shortcomings.

Actually, would consider an Audi A8 or a Phaeton assuming my M5 realises £12k to £15k? The 4 wheel drive capability would be handy for me during the winter and I like the totally unassuming presence of both vehicles - the Phaeton would be specially good in this regard....a Volkswagen that is (or was) really a dressed down Bentley Continental.

(Actually, I still have a hankering after a Porsche 911 of the 993 coupe variety which I was in some danger of buying just before I got the M5. It's an itch that's going to need scratching one day.)
