Thinking of doing this with a 1999 Z3 which seems to be a rare car over there. Anyone got experience of this?

Are you moving there?

If so you can take a car you've owned for more than a year, depending on your visa etc. but otherwise it's highly unlikely you'd get it there. Pre 1989 cars are easier.

Try this http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/...

Imports are very hard to sell on in Aus even if you get it into the country under the personal import rules, The aussies are not really into soft tops either hence why they are rare. It will also cost you about 50% of the cars current value to get it over there, through customs and registered. If it does not owe you a lot and its a keeper then worth doing, to try and make a profit dont bother.

Given the cost you face of getting it there $16k doesn't really make it worthwhile doing it, shipping it there isn't cheap nor is the tax on the tax etc of getting it in. It's vehicles that may sell for $50k+ that can be worthwhile, at the $16k level it's doubtful you'd make much.

Check out the topic in the Australia section in the forum, there is a wealth of information and knowledge. I did it with my e46 m3 but it was expensive but probably worth it for that car
