Ok, I do do it. I know the 'official' method is the shuffling one, and as a past qualified driving instructor, can do it proficiently. I just don't understand the problem to let the steering wheel spin back as your need steering lock to come off. I keep my hands at the 9 to 3 position, and I can grab it instantly if I need to, and I’m able to turn it either way fast. So why is it a big NO NO.

I suppose it's for the same reasons that wheel spinning is a no no, even though you can instantly back off the throttle etc. Not in full control are you, see? Gonna kill everyone, see?

I let it slip, as I am teaching my wife to drive, I tried the shuffling method, and found it almost impossible to do fast enough.

The driving examiner won't like it on her test drive.

People have DUI'd for many years without accidents, doesn't mean it's a sensible idea.

Yes I do; like you, I keep my hands in position with a small amount of pressure on the wheel and increase that pressure if I need to slow the rate the lock comes off.

I do occasionally do shuffling/non-crossing arms technique and you can get the wheel turned or un-turned quickly (and consistent practice would make it faster) but it just seems so inefficient.

Yup do it all the time in urban areas. Pretty safe if you're know how to do it. Same with palm steering.

Who on earth shuffles confused

Depends what she's testing for, when I did my lorry tests the examiners all said 'Don't bother with all of that wheel shuffling bks'

From memory, a few things are different on your HGV test, min roundabouts, encouraged to progress at all times etc.

I was palm steering and allowing the wheel to spin through my hands...no one ever said anything about it and that was in 2008..

Your examiner was lenient then. That is a fail point for it and a friend failed their test for it.

It isn't any kind of no no, let alone a big one.

I had advanced driving lessons with the chap that teaches the police how to drive fast at Hendon... he told me to NEVER push pull, only over let slip. Much more efficient and quicker.
