Hi all,

I am am looking to buy a newer car for motorway duties, it has to be a diesel frown anyway less of that, I have seen a few cars but looking for a specific one with the higher bhp output.

Question time: Is there a way I can tell what power output the car is just from the numberplate? the model I am looking at has a couple of the cars with the same engine size but different power levels, would this show on the V5? or any other way to find out?

Thanks for any help.

2009 Mazda 6 2.2d sport, looking for the 185 bhp model specifically, they do the same car with same engine size but with lower bhp. I have seen a couple for sale but they have no description on power output.

As per US' suggestion or do the DVLA tax check online if you know the reg.

Have checked the DVLA/Gov site with the reg number but does not show power output.

Easier than you'd think....

The VINs differ with power output, also be aware that Euro4 and Euro5 high power models also have different power outputs.

JMZGH1* C = Euro 4 2.2 diesel 125ps

JMZGH1* B = Euro 4 2.2 diesel 163ps

JMZGH1* A = Euro 4 2.2 diesel 185ps

JMZGHA* A = Euro 5 2.2 diesel 180ps

  • denotes body style as follows
2 = 4 door saloon
4 = 5 door hatchback
9 = estate/wagon or whatever you want to call it.

If you find one with D in place of the A,B or C it's the older 2.0 diesel, which was initially carried over from the older Mazda6 and was used from launch until mid 2009.
