Just after a bit of advice really..

Our family car is a 2005 Renault Scenic 1.6vvc. Every now and then you will hit the start button and the engine will turn over and start but sound like an agricultural diesel engined bd and stall after about a second. Generally, it will start the second time spot on and be nice and quiet as usual.

My partner has discovered that if you start it and it does this, you can rev through it and after a few seconds of sounding like a diesel, it quietens down and doesn't stall.

Since the cold weather has crept in, it seems to happen more often and I'm hoping it wont develop into something worse.

Now i'm expecting a few to suggest it's starting down on a cylinder but I've had blown coils and all sorts in the past and this definitely isn't that, or at least I'm 95% certain it isn't. Sounds nothing like you would expect it to plus it isn't down on power and revs perfectly normally. The noise is like when you were a kid and would jam a coke can onto your bikes back wheel and ride it around thinking it was cool sounding like a motorbike. Almost like theres a chunk of plastic bouncing off the cogs on the crack pulley.

It's pretty impossible to see if this is the case as the whole engine is covered in bd plastic and metal coverings and I would rather seek a simpler solution than to pull it all apart just to get a look, plus I'm pretty sure it's not that simple either as the sound wouldn't just randomly come and go or stall the engine either.

Anyone any experience with these cars or engines?

Cheers

Yup. Dephaser pulley without doubt.

You can get genuine ones for around £120 on ebay

You'd be as well to stick a timing belt on while you're in there.

Also, i "think" theres a tool required to do the work, so confirm the mechanic you use has done them before.

Thanks for the info!

So what does this dephaser do? what will happen if it totally fails? It's been making this sound on and off for probably a year or more and only just recently started being more regular along with the colder weather.

TBH it's due a cambelt soon anyway.

Defhaser knocks the timing out by a few degrees.

when its broken it knocks it out even more untill oil pressure is built up, or it fails completely and it'll spin with out the taking th camshaft with it , totalling the engine.

As above RE: result if you dont change it.

It normally happens when the engine is cold, hence why you're maybe hearing it more now.

Get it done ASAP and the timing belt too, so you're only out the "extra" for the dephaser pulley.

On the plus side, its a common fault so if you go to sell the car, you can say its been done smile

Cheers again for the info.

Looks like it might be a long weekend for me in the near future pulling the bd car apart them. Just pricing up parts and looking it will be at least £200 to me with the locking tools (although can sell those on after) .. so garage probs be more on the £4-500 side.
