hi, i need a litter help, not to sure what to do next,

i took my car to the local independent garage because it was leaking coolant (slow pace), i advised them to give me quote before work was carried out. but they decided not to do that and just gave me a bill of (£75 which i thought was quite high and not getting authorization) anyway i paid up and decided i would never use that garage again and put it down to experience

now a week on the coolant leak fault still exists, i dont want to go back to that garage for them to sting me again with another unauthorized bill.

is there anything i can do, because they have already charged me £75 for fixing the fault, which they havnt done

what should i do next

(note regarding title spelling mistake,it should be Fault* , Sorry)

thanks in advance

Take it back. Tell them its not leaking, so they didn't fix the problem, they merely replaced something that didn't need replacing.

Tell them to fix the leak and that you don't expect to see a bill

Go back and tell them they haven't fixed it.

Either take it back to said garage or take into another one. What was carried out for £75 cant have been anything big for that sort of prices. Can you actually see a leak or has the level dropped, it may have had a air lock which has worked its way out and dropped the level of coolant. Top up again and see what its like in a weeks time etc.

What did they actually do for £75?

they showed me a split pipe (maybe 20cm long rubber pipe), and said this was the problem, the only way i can tell its leaking is the dashboard displays, red thermometer with water, and then coolant level always fall below minimum. i have to top up coolant once a week, but suppose it could be locked air i will monitor coolant levels this week again

£75 was the Total bill, Coolant Pressure Check £40, Labour £25, Parts £10

Maybe there's more than one leak?

I'd take it back and get them to have another look - or take it somewhere else if you don't want to use them again

the car garage i brought the car from, is quite far and due to work, its hard to go drop the car off, but they have said they'd carry out the work for free, should i just go for this option

If you only just bought it get it back to them to repair the fault they even said they will do it free of charge.

i was thinking of the principle of paying someone to diagnose the coolant leak and fix it, and the problem still being there.

i can take it to the garage we purchased the car from but that will mean taking time off work, driving down, getting the train back, then repeat when we go collect it. just a lot of hassle

That's your problem your bought a car so far away. You have to choices take it back to same garage or take it to a new garage. Its not uncommon for a car to have more than one coolant leak but one bigger than the other. A pressure test will spot the biggest leak first so that's the fault, replace that part top up coolant take for run come back top up if its dropped slightly which it will do then quick check to see if its not leaking and job done.
Everytime I do a job on coolant leaks I will always advice the customer to keep an eye on the coolant level over the next week or so just incase it keep on losing fluid.

What car is it? Some cars are notorious for having lost coolant due to worn Coolant/Water Pumps. Lost coolant can lead to boiling prematurely and/or excess pressure splitting an old or perished hose which is the result of, not the prime cause of coolant losses.
