... I prefer part-exing or scrapping a car, to selling it on.

Within seconds of putting my spares-or-repair beemer on Gumtree, my mobile rang.

"I'd like to come and buy it straight away" Err ok, a bit late (gone 9), but obviously keen with a gumtree alert set. Sent my postcode, they were about an hour or so away.

Ten minutes later, text "I'm on the motorway"

Hour and 20 later (10:30pm) "Going to be about 45 minutes, is that OK?" You should be here by now.

Phone call follows "My uncle's car broke down on the motorway, my brother is giving me a lift now, is 45 minutes OK?" Yeah, I don't go to bed early.

10 minutes or so later, text "Getting too late now, can I come tomorrow?" If you like. But I won't hold my breath.

Been trying to work out what the scam could be (for a common car, advertised at £400 - it's not worth stealing, or finding out when we're not home compared to 2 million other houses, or claiming it broke and can we have half our money back); decide actually the guy's probably just a flakey plonker who I'll not hear from again (or fairly certainly will never actually see) and also remember that the nice chap who sold me the replacement at the weekend was very apologetic about taking a deposit, but "you wouldn't believe people...". Yes. I would.

Yeah annoying. Conversely, I put my 2008 125i up for sale here for £12,995 and sold it within days to a charming 22-year old young woman who was the first to enquire. She paid full asking as I had someone else waiting. Painless.
