Just looking for a quick bit of advice.

My first car, which is still in the family, I am giving to my partners younger sister as her first car. The car is still currently on the road, MOT, taxed & insured.

It needs quite a bit of working doing, which is going to be undertaken at another family friends garage. He has agreed it can be stored with SORNed, and until she passes her test sometime next year.

Is it going to be best for me to SORN it and then transfer the car, or transfer it first before declaring it SORN? I'm not quite sure if having the car SORN makes the process any different at all?

Many Thanks

I'd go with:

1. Take to garage
2. Declare SORN
3. Transfer keeper only when the work is all done and the OH's sister is ready to use it

Seems to be the least hassle. If she changes her mind about wanting it or the garage owner gets fed up of it hanging around at least everything is under your control

It's worth noting that a change of keeper will cancel any SORN and cause the car to be liable for tax and insurance.

So this ^ seems the most sensible way of going about it.

Thanks for the replies.

Car is already at the garage so no issue there. I've known the owner of the garage for quite a few years and has worked on my cars as well; they intend to do this car as a project (as his daughter also wants to be involved).

Ideally I'd like the paperwork sorted as soon as possible, with tax running out end of November.

However if a change of owner means it's liable, do I transfer first then SORN. Or SORN, transfer and re-SORN?

All sounds like a bit of a nightmare!

No need for it to be a nightmare.

If it's already at the garage, SORN it so you get a rebate on any remaining tax.

Transfer the keeper and send off the V5. They come back in around a week from the DVLA.

Once the V5 comes back, re-sorn it with the new keeper. It can be sorn'ed with the new V5 reference.

Done.

You can send the SORN form off along with the V5 when changing keeper - I've just sent one this morning for a car currently at trade, and there is a box to tick if you are sending the V5 along with it.

Slightly off topic, but when a SORN is declared using a paper form do DVLA issue any acknowledgement under the new system? I ask because I've just recently bought a car, the seller sent the V5 himself and I sent in the downloaded SORN form (you can't SORN online without the V5). I've had the new V5 back but heard nothing about the SORN. It shows as untaxed online but does say it may be up to five days to be updated. Just a bit twitchy as I know the first I might hear is a fine for not being taxed.
