My local garage has just replaced my clutch, but when I fetched the car, the bite point is really, really low - and the mechanic admitted it wasn't right.

It's also very difficult to select gears, so the clutch is clearly not releasing fully.

It sounds as though he's struggling to get the correct clutch kit (he was sent 3 different types before settling on the one he fitted).

He is convinced it's the correct clutch - but clearly it isn't.

The car is an '02 Skoda Octavia 1.8T estate, type 1U2 with a dual mass flywheel (the flywheel is ok so not being replaced).

Looking at the GSF site, I see there are 3 types listed.

The one he fitted is this one

But I note that this one is listed as being for AGU,ARX,AUM,ARZ engine variants (my engine number is AUM0769xxAGU) - so both AUM & AGU???.

He was sent this one the first time - but he said this clearly was wrong.

Can anybody offer any advice as to which is the correct one please?

Finally - is LUK a good brand?

TIA.

Pretty sure yours is an AUM. The AGU engine was discontinued in 99/00

Was the slave cylinder replaced at the same time as the clutch?

A low biting point and difficulty engaging gears can often be a faulty slave cylinder or a clutch system full or air.

Does the clutch pedal feel easy to depress with minimal effort and lack spring on the return?

The slave cylinder wasn't replaced, but the clutch pedal does feel excessively light and does indeed lack spring on return.

The system has been bled, but this hasn't made any difference.

To me, it feels as though the fork / release bearing is not making contact with the fingers until the pedal is over 3/4 depressed, and then suddenly there is some movement, but not enough to completely release the clutch.

Almost as if the pressure plate assembly is too shallow, but he says he measured it against the old one and it's the same.

He also says the release bearing has the same dimensions as the old one.

The only thing I can think is that the pressure plate assembly is wrong, despite him saying he measured it against the old one.

One more thing... when I got into the car, before I started the engine I pressed on the clutch, and when I lifted my foot up (not quickly) the pedal came up, and then suddenly I felt something 'hit' the pedal - almost as if the pressure plate had jammed momentarily and then released, pushing the clutch fork back sharply, which I felt in the pedal.

Kind of odd I thought!
