Aftermarket Gauge(s)

Has anyone used this OBD gauge kit?
and if so what is the black box, lower right of the picture, used for?
I assume the plug with wire goes into the OBD socket and (this bit I am guessing) the wire plugs into the black box, it looks like it does, and as the black box doesn't appear to have a wire maybe them sends a remote signal to the gauge. I did ask the seller how this set up works and well, that's why I'm asking here!!
The up/down arrows on the gauge change the mode.
