As many of us know and the rest of us are to find out (when they buy/sell a car), as from October this year tax discs were abolished along with the introduction of new road tax rules.

The change was very badly communicated.

When an owner sells a car, the remaining full moths of tax are refunded.
- However if you sell on the 1st of a month, you lose the entire month.

In order to use the car (even to drive it home) the new buyer then has to pay again for that entire month, even though it's been paid for and not refunded.

This means that for practically all car sales, we (you and I) will lose out twice.
Firstly when selling our car, and then having to pay the DVLA to use the new car, as they're keeping the money which they could pro rata daily and reimburse.

The DVLA know the exact date the car is sold: this is even made available on the DVLA Car Tax Check web site.
- however they WILL NOT allow the public to be refunded fairly or pay new tax daily, nor the balance of the broken month.

On top of doubling up monthly tax, they will now likely execute SORN fines from a specific date and benefit from untaxed vehicle fines - even though the tax had been covered (but kept by them).

In a nutshell, here's a petition to try and stop them.

Well worth spending a few moments signing;

Do we need yet another one? None of the previous attempts got much support.

It's the only current e-petition I could find as they do not allow double ups.

I would say YES we do need the petition, and hopefully people will not only sign but share it religiously.

The Government will be hoping that this slips away. If it does, then so do the chances of change.

Signed, although the number of signatures didn't change before and after I did it.

ETA - Needed to click the link in the confirmation email for it to be added.

There were plenty of threads/petitions like this when the changes started. None of them attracted much support.

I wrote to my MP and got this reply.

Dear Alex

Thank you for your email. I am sorry that you feel that the system of administering and refunding Road tax is unfair. I trust that you will appreciate that a good deal of administrative work and time goes into issuing tax discs and processing refunds and I understand that the application for Road Tax makes it clear that the tax is payable from the moment the car is taken onto a public road, whenever in the month that occurs. Similarly, tax is only refunded for complete unused months.

I believe that it would be extremely difficult for a cost-effective procedure to be put in place to deal with the specific circumstances that you quote.

I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful at this time.

Best wishes

Might as well reply asking him where the bl**dy tax disc is then smile Ask him how much human interaction there is in using an online system to pay via digital means, and why that human interaction wasn't factored in to the annual price, as that mail reads like they are relying on the "spare" months to fund the unemployables in Swansea. Ask him as well, while you are there, why the hell it wasn't simply added to fuel duty, and half of Swansea sacked biggrin

Exactly randlemarcys

The dates are computerised so it's a matter of connecting the dots.

The infrastructure is already there as these dates are displayed on dvla tax check

...funny how some people have time to write "I honestly couldn't care" but wouldn't bother with the petition.

Is it really worth the toss over such a small amount of money? Less than the cost of a few beers for most cars

It is a fking con really. Slightly off Topic but if I were to Sorn my car today or in fact anytime before the 1st December, will I get the full remaining 4 months back?

I do not think refunds for partial months make sense, however the vehicle should stay taxed until the end of the month. Signed it, if only because not bothering is what the government prefer us to do.

So what did people do when complaining about this do when they may have sold there car without tax before.

I could same more money not getting a couple of bars of chocolate etc or a magazine every now and again. This is just a non problem if your that worried just wait till the tax has run out then sell it.

The only e petition ive ever seen work is to save the brighton speed trials every other pointless stupid petition has failed.
Just love the mentality of some complaining about this, im so outraged I will sign a online petition that will shock them you may as well piss in to the wind.

just to give an example of such a flawed system - which this is.

Bought car 14th November
Received V5 in my name on Friday 28th November

- Should I tax the car for 2 days?
- Should I have SORNED the car for 2 days?

Roll on 1st December (this morning)
- I Take V5 to work and try to tax the car online (as the leaflet in the newly provided DVLA envelope explained how to do).
- Fill in the details as requested using the newly provided V5 in my name/address.

Unable to use service

Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for vehicle tax or make a SORN using this service.

You will need to apply for the vehicle tax or make a SORN at a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax using the reminder (Vehicle Tax/SORN application) or the registration certificate/new keeper supplement (V5C/2 if you are a new keeper) together with the MOT test certificate/GVT test certificate (if applicable) and fee.
For vehicles registered to a Northern Ireland address you must also take an insurance certificate or cover note.

You can declare SORN by sending form V890 to DVLA Swansea. Click here to get V890
So, clearly cant do this online, using the information which the DVLA have provided, using their V5 in my name and their Online Road Tax website.

- Telephone DVLA.
- 10 minutes of Automated bullst
- Told it can not be completed over the phone - instead I must go to a Post Office which issues Vehicle Tax.

So, clearly cant do this on the Phone, using the information which the DVLA have provided, using their V5 in my name and their Online Road Tax automated telephone system.

Third time lucky at the post office where the tax was bought and paid for with no problems.
- The guys at the counter said that I would not believe the amount of people who can not tax online nor over the phone, and that the system simply doesn't work.

Any ideas?

You should have taxed the car from 1st November on the day you bought it (14th November) using the reference number on the 'new keeper supplement'; these are the rules, and the e-petition is about this situation and these rules (and having them altered wink )...

What have you been doing since the 14th of November? Obviously not using the car on the road, as the car was untaxed?

Why does everyone care so much about this? It's hardly a big deal is it. The money goes into the tax pot anyway so if they change it they'll make up the shortfall somewhere else.
