DVSA is conducting preliminary research ahead of a full public consultation into scrapping some elements of the practical driving test, in an effort to modernise the test and make it more relevant to real life driving. The elements proposed for scrapping are:

Turn in the road, and

Reverse around a corner.

As if there weren't enough people on the roads that eithr have no idea their car has a reverse gear, or are utterly incompetent at its use! I'm against.

Apologies if this is already widely known; it was news to me.

Doomed?

Really?

The only things of those that i have witnessed are by people who have already passed their test, and still fk it up.

Therefore, i can't see the point in them either.

I would rather they concentrated on the general driving standards.

Why have they singled out those? What makes them less relevant than a bay park? Most people seem to drive in forwards these days anyway. Stupid idea. What they really need to be doing is finding a safe way to put motorway driving into the test. How mad is it that you can legally drive on the motorway without being tested for competency?

So by that logic you would just let people drive with no test? wink

"Under a revised practical exam, learners may also be asked to use a satellite navigation system instead of following road signs."

Since a large number of drivers seemingly can't follow road signs at the best of times, this really doesn't surprise me one iota.

I find the quality of the instructor has much more to do with the quality of the driver, than what the driving test includes.

My instructor went out of his way to teach me many things not included on the test which were relevant to real-world driving. Maybe it helped I was genuinely interested in driving?

Either way plenty of my peers were shockingly bad drivers and I don't really think any one particular generation has produced better or worse drivers really.

Not everywhere has motorways within a close proximity of the test center. I used to live on the Isle of Wight and there are no motorways on the island at all. How would you test people here?

Funny enough the SatNav had sent me through that ford about a month earlier - It was a little confusing in the dark with a yokel tailgating ( Google Maps) - but at least water levels were much lower then.

Plenty of signs up this way with an HGV on it and a large warning saying "DO NOT FOLLOW SAT NAV".

They are trying to reflect how people actually use their cars, if you want a reversing around a corner masturbation session about how tight they got it in then that is not going to happen. They will still need to do reverse parking, they won't need to do the reverse around a corner which of course every van driver does.

Easy...two stage licenses.

Pass test, allows to drive on all non-M-way roads (as you do when learning)

If you want to drive on a motorway you have to take an additional supervised test afterwards.

Wouldn't be that different to the way motorbike licenses work.
