I'm looking to help my parents in law buy a new car as they ferry my kids around a lot and i don't like them going in the knackered car they currently have.

It needs to be Civic/Focus sized, with 5 doors and needs to be diesel (as he drives circa 25,000 miles/year).
Budget is very, very tight as they don't have much money. It doesn't need any bells and whistles.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

How tight is the tight budget?

Our Nissan Note has been pretty good over the last few years. Returns 64mpg, £30 road tax. The sliding back seat is useful dependent on what you are ferrying round. (kids/ adults/ tip run or both) I know toys are not a priority but the Tekna specification is pretty good. Had no reliability problems with it either.....

It is boring though .... so fits with your thread title....

I'd say a Toyota Corolla/Auris/Avensis with the 2.0 diesel engine. Definitely not the 2.2 made of chocolate though.

We are thinking of buying it for them and then them paying us back, with us probably subsidising it a bit. Basically, I want to do it as cheap as possible, but at the same time it needs to be something decent.

The Hyundai's with 5 year unlimited mileage warranties look good, anyone got any experience?

My wifes just purchased a new 1.2 5 door active i20, seats 4 okay. Very impressed so far cost just over £8k sfter discount. It does 40mpg short runs around town and close to 50 on a run. Fairly comfortable on a recent 300 mile run and drives well on the motorway. We wanted petrol anyway but not sure how good the diesels are.
A pal has an i30 seems a spacious thing.

Thanks, that's what I've just been looking at. Looks like a smart purchase, with basically 5 years of fixed cost motoring.
