Driving early on a Sunday morning. It's foggy and damp and visibility is very poor.

Apparently the roads of Hampshire and Berkshire have plenty of drivers who are oblivious that without lights, they are invisible to other road users.

The plum in a silver Corsa in dense fog with no lights on.

The potato brain in the dark gray Peugeot overtaking a parked truck even though another car was coming. Again the Peugeot had no lights on. The woman in the Fiat 500 coming the other way was quite rightly very angry.

The scooter rider on the single track lane with no lights.

The black Citroen.

The blue Mondeo.

The white VW transporter.

I could go on.

I used to think that daylight running lights were annoying. I now realise they are essential tools for the survival of the species.

There are a LOT of really stupid people out there.

If they were invisible to other road users, how did you see them?

Oh Yes.

You forgot: tailgating, cutting you up, being alongside you on the motorway before you have even crossed the white line into the next lane. All done in heavy rain, spray, fog, and without lights.

Seems we had the opposite here in Bristol, yesterday morning.

1000m+ visibility, light morning mist, a good 7/10 or more with their fog lights (front and rear) on. :roll eyes:

Sidelights fine, but the number of plonkers driving with their fogs on was a bit baffling- especially as when it is foggy everybody seems to forget they've even got lights for fog. frown

Timfy, I'm guilty. After driving through fog on my way to work and setting both front and rear lights to on, I drove the rest of the way in blue skied sunshine with all lights blaring. You can't win sometimes. In my defence, I'd not yet had coffee. As penance, I shall watch no Harris or Petrolicious vids for a week, only knuckleheads ragging Saxos round a Tesco car park yelling YOLO. Seem fair?

This may sound stupid but someone at work had an argument with me over this, he never knew his car had fog lights to begin with (MK5 Golf) and when i stated that rear fogs are mandatory and have been for a while he tried to argue till i showed him where the switch was on his own car.....

Back to the topic that yes a large amount of people on the road are stupid and it seems its lights that seem to confuse them the most for example driving with fogs/headlights in good visibility, driving with no fog lights in bad fog or my personal favorite which is driving with no lights at all at night. It still baffles me how someone cant realize they have no lights on when 1) they cant see the road ahead, 2) cant see their dials most important one being the speedo of course.

Something i realized quickly when i first had lessons is that driving itself is easy but the hard part is watching out for all the idiots that are on the road around you because unfortunately you cant rely on people to use common sense or intelligence when they drive.

The problem with that is a lot of modern cars have illuminated dash/speedo etc when the lights are off......

Which means it's not a big red flag to help muppets realise the lights aren't on!!

The front and rear fog-light switches should be linked to the ECU and when the buttons are pressed, a speed-limiter is engaged, which limits the vehicle to 20mph.

If the conditions are bad enough to warrant the use of fog-lights, there's no need to be going any faster.

And is we are doing that all fog light switches should automatically re-set to off when the ignition is turned off.....

One foggy day or night and the vast majority of cars run around with fogs on for weeks

The one that baffles me is people driving around with their wipers going full tilt but with no lights on. Shirley is you need one it might be wise to use the other?

Why? every year we have the same boring threads about people driving with no lights, people driving with DRLS, fogs when they aren't needed. People driving with iced up windows, led and xenon headlamps and brake lights being too bright, people driving with headlights out. Etc etc etc

It's slightly repetative and every thread has the same boring outcome.

Not just fog but everyday at dusk, every other driver had no lights on! Most seem to be women and elderly people, not realising that lights are not just to see but to be seen especially when people around you have their lights on then they will be hard to see at junctions etc. As for front fog lights on in non foggy conditions I find they don't bother me or 'burn my retinas', at least they have lights on ffs. I'd fine the hundreds of idiots that have no understanding when to use headlights, how is it even possible just to use sidelights in the gloom? A car should automatically go to dipped lights if sidelights are on and the car starts moving.

Because it pisses off safety conscious road users! If you don't like these boring threads then don't bother replying.

Yep, absolutely agree.
