Has anyone got any more info on what to do nowadays? Might be buying a car privately tomorrow.

Can't work out how the new tax rules work, and the links in google (unless I'm not searching for the right things) are mainly news items.

How/when should I tax etc? Anyone been through the process?

Also, when selling, does the government refund you automatically?

Cheers

Paul

new owner has to buy the road tax as the seller gets a refund on the existing road tax, all you need is the ref number from the V5/C and can buy your tax online as theres no physical tax disc anymore

Basically as soon as the name on the V5c is changed the road tax is refunded to the current keeper, therefor any car you buy comes without tax

True but when you actually buy the car it's still taxed presumably as the DVLA haven't received notification of the change yet. Or is the fact that it's done retrospectively to the transaction implies that you should "re-tax" it at the same time as the transaction or can you do that the day after without driving an untaxed car ?

I agree there are no clear guidelines that I have seen yet.

You agree to buy the car and either tax it online or over the phone using the reference number on the new keeper supplement.

It's only refunded if you apply for a refund.
Basically, the road fund license stays with the owner, not the vehicle.

Refund is automatic on notification of change of owner. There is no need to apply for one.

It doesn't answer the OP's question as to the mechanics of what happens when he buys his new car tomorrow with regard to 'taxing' it though wink .

OP, you agree to buy the car then buy VED for it (from the start of the month) over the telephone or online (or at a PO if this suits) before driving it away (as posted by another poster upthread). Don't forget that the vehicle does NOT need to be insured before you can 'tax' it wink , but it must be MoTed. You will take the 'new keeper supplement' of the old V5C with you when you drive away, still.

The seller then sends the V5C off and gets a refund of the remaining VED from the end of the month.

That's it. smile

^ Where have you been and have you read any of the threads or even researched it before saying stuff that is frankly rubbish

As soon as DVLA get a new owner notification - they send a refund for outstanding tax it's automatic no application or anything - same if you SORN a vehicle it arrives in the post even if you don't ask for it.

Although you point about staying with owner rather than vehicle is a good way of looking at it

New owner needs to tax as soon as purchased

VED is not transferable.

Oh and yes there will be an overlap and yes it's another revenue stream for the DVLA because DVLA only refund full months

Congratulations OP on getting the Max out of your VED by purchasing on the first of the month
Commiserations to the seller who (if still taxed) will only get a refund for Jan onwards.
