Please reccomend me a car.
Discussion
My Fiesta ST182 is no more so I need another car. I have an import mx5 for track days / sunny days (currently in bits)
Stuff I've had I liked: 328 msport, 2013 fiesta ecoboost, 2014 fiesta st, 318is, lots of mx5s, E320 petrol
Some points:
I'm currently doing 12-15k a year (private mileage)
Budget is ideally a couple of grand but willing to go higher.
I hate diesel - I really really hate diesel - I think I need a diesel
I need to move myself and sometimes other stuff but rarely anything big - no kids/pets
I'd like:
30mpg is bareable as long as its fairly quick / good to drive
Heated seats
Bluetooth - happy to change the stereo if it doesn't mean rewiring the car (ie very modern stuff)
Also:
Would be great to be able to tow a tonne or so (think mx5 on a lightish trailer)
Be quick and handle well
Ideally Be rwd / awd
Hit me with suggestions. The cheaper the car (to buy and maintain to a good standard) the less I'm worried about fuel / tax / insurance

Can it be a 2 seater? Can it be a hot hatch?
Off the cuff I'd suggest BMW 330i or Jag x type 3.0 at those prices but be prepared for a leggy one....
Yes it could be a 2 seater ideally at least a 2+2 though. Hot hatches are fine too.Off the cuff I'd suggest BMW 330i or Jag x type 3.0 at those prices but be prepared for a leggy one....
Happy to spend a fair amount more if it does everything I want.
For your criteria, top choices would be the BMW 330i or Jag x type 3.0. Sticking with jags if you upped your budget a bit you are talking old Xk's or even s type R'so if you can live with the economy and insurance.
For a great ticks all you boxes car, it'd be hard to beat a skoda octavia vrs hatch circa 2006 vintage for about £3.5k upwards. Up to about £5k would get you into the Mk5 Golf GTi club.
Also consider Audi A4 3.2 Quattro or 1.8T Quattro A4 or A3. Even a TT.
Then maybe Hyudai coupe or Alfa 156 / GT. Lots of good interesting metal out there. If it were me I'd be looking at e90 330i's if I could stretch the budget or a VRS. Ticks all the boxes and both make fine commuting machines.

Another vote for a six-pot 3-series - as unbiased as I am!
As a balance of performance, comfort, enjoyment and economy I haven't found any reasonable competitor at the £2k price point. A 330i might be a struggle for that money, but if you start out looking at £2k 328is and then suffer the inevitable scope creep towards newer, nicer and more powerful alternatives you'll justify dropping twice that in no time
My average over 20k enthusiastic miles in my E46 328i is 30.2mpg (from always doing brim-to-brim, not trip computer). M54 engines as found in the 330i should be slightly better. Several times, I've driven that car 400+ miles up to Scotland in one day, it's great at that, and then it's also great at being thrown down a B-road when you get there. A thoroughly capable car.
