Filtering into traffic over Hatched lines but broken border.
Discussion
So , imagine the scene. Two cars waiting to turn left into queing traffic at traffic lights. To the very left of us, they have recently painted hatched lines (with a broken border) I believe to stop cars under cutting those waiting patiently. So, imagine a third car mount the kerb and pull over the hatched markers to avoid waiting and pull past the first wanting to turn left too. In his defence he allegedly wanted to go left at the lights and both cars in front wanted to go right.
Is it legal to drive over the hatched lines ?, if so why are they there ?. They are relatively new so must serve some purpose. Is it ok "if safe to do so" ?
Que horn etc.

^^^ Hatched with broken edge lines is a should not, solid edge is must not except in case of emergency.

Hmm, very. If you can cross them though it seems useless having them there. They were not there a year ago and I believe it was introduced to stop people doing this. WOrst case, someones queing properly and then thinks "No , i'll go left at the lights at the end instead" and pull out into that lane, just as someone nips past on the inside . ALso the second car is hidden from the main road traffic and could pull out into the oncoming car. WOuld be easier if it was an unbroken line to avoid confusion.
It would have been OK to cross the hatching had he been going in a direction in which it was clear to proceed immediately (for example to pass traffic waiting to turn right into a side road). However, even in that case mounting the pavement would still have been illegal.
Using it to pull in front of a car waiting to go in the same direction as himself is utterly stupid, regardless.

Oh, so the cars at the front were waiting to turn right, but some behind were waiting to turn left?
If I was the front-most car which was turning left, I might have used the hatched area. I wouldn't have passed others waiting to turn left though and certainly wouldn't have driven on the pavement.
It doesn't sound like he actually got in anyone's way though, so I don't really see the harm in what he did?

It really is quite unbelievable that anybody would even try to suggest that the behaviour described in the OP is in any way acceptable, but it probably explains the standard of driving these days.
Driving over the kerb to jump a queue? Putting yourself in a zone designed to stop road users coming into conflict to jump a queue? You really think a traffic policeman would ignore this?

One of my (admittedly many) pets hates is hatched off roads areas. Essentially wasted tarmac. Theres a few places in Fareham where the ideal place to merge or turn off a busy road has been hatched over. Why? To force EVERYONE to slow down just because I need to? I make a point of getting out of everyone's way and will use the expensive, unused tarmac to good effect.
This bit is a classic. Instead of a few nice big arrows down the road, gallons of paint used to make a large section of road totally pointless.

Yeaj your probably right , just not sure what the hatching is there for really. Personnaly wouldnt know either if it was ok to drive over them .
Yeah, I've never really seen the point in broken-edged hatching in the huge majority of cases. I can only assume that the road was deemed too narrow for two full lanes but they wanted to allow people to pass in the situation you describe. Mr GrimNasty said:
