This got me thinking:

How much can spend on optional extras. Taking the base cost of any car, how much can you spend, using the manufactures official spec calculator, on a car? What is the highest anyone can manage, as a percentage of the base cost. I'm taking the percentage as a fairer measure, as it puts all cars on an equal footing, rather than handing a massive advantage to luxury manufacturers, where a set of ceramic brakes can cost more than a small hatchback, but still be a small change in the overall cost.

We have a starting point of £46975.00, or 84% of the cost of the car.

You can spec a Boxster up so that the options are (just) worth more than the base price. The best I could manage was 102% but there's so many contradicting options that I probably didn't get the highest.

There was a thread on here a few months ago about this; iirc someone spec'd a bog standard Polo (or maybe A1/A3) and added every possible option and the total price almost doubled from the OTR price.

Also, I'm assuming you're not wanting us to go into the murky world of Bentley/Rolls/Maybach/Range Rover's full personal customization services? wink

Bentley don't show the price of the options - if you have to ask.....

Quotable options only. I'm sure Ferrari with there bespoke coachworking service would come out high otherwise.

A £180k Ferrari 458 Italia can become a £300k+ vehicle with judicious use of the options list, carbon fibre trim is particularly eye-watering.

I think it's pretty insane you can spec a BMW 1 series to £42,850!

Here we go....

The mighty BMW 114i ES 3-Door "Sports" Hatch with a whopping 103 hp.

List price of £17,775
Options price of £15,870

You would have to be smoking crack to spec up a car like this - wonder if it ever happens?

Just done it! I'm sure the £750 M-spec suspension will be handy with 103hp....

When I spec'd my Cooper S back in 2004, I spent 62% of the £14600 list on options to make over £23.5k.

I would guess Mini's would still be the same - there's a massive list of options

Jaguar are getting better at it but not being able to add bigger wheels or leather seats to the base spec car holds them back

Interesting that you can't add the same % of options to the higher spec car.

How many people actually buy the basic Audi, BMW or Merc though

When I bought my E Class we put over £10k of options on it but that was pretty standard really

Because things that are optional on base models are standard fit on higher/top spec models.

Yes, the options list at Mr Porsche's shop is truly eye-watering. Very easy to throw big money at cosmetic enhancements or track oriented additions.

Happily I escaped with an "S" in almost base spec' - decent value for a road car IMO.
