So someone cant get that plate if the same car as theirs, have plates made up then be driving on false plates. Thus avoiding speeding fines etc

Personally i've never bothered

Reducing the cloning risk. Simple as that.

Of course, but it is easy to search an owners' club or classified advert if you need a specific model to clone.

I thought it was to avoid your photos being "borrowed" by a scammer.

And also you would want to clone a vehicle from the other end of the country rather than one in the next street to you.

Ok lets test this.

The next poster has just stolen a blue BMW 320d 2006, how long before you can find a numberplate to stick on it.

Easier and quicker than waiting at the side of the road for one to pass by.

There have been posts on here and elsewhere where people have gone through hell. Yeah it gets sorted in the end but it's a lot of stress and time.

I thought it was more for security rather than cloning.

Not sure you still can but not too long ago with a number plate you could get an address from the dvla very easily.

You send a letter and 5 pound and say number plate sally1 keeps parking and blocking my drive can you supply an address so I can write him a letter.

Then you have an address. With things today you only need to puss off the wrong person and they are at you door or steeling your rare or expensive car.

As little information you post the better to be honest.

I had my bike cloned some years back, I ended up selling it, as I got fed up of all the hassle from the police.

They checked mine, and confirmed that mine was the real thing, and gave me a letter saying as much.

But it got tiring getting stopped, and having to show the letter.

You might care when you start getting penalty charge notices, NIP's, bailiff letters through the post or your car being clamped. It's not just about the occasional stop by the police. If a cloned car has driven off without paying for fuel, you'll most likely find the pump wont switch on next time you go to fill up and they'll refuse to sell you fuel. Besides all that, yep, nothing to be too fussed about! mad
