silly I was going 50 mph in 3rd gear when I tried to shift into 4th but I didnt clutch in properly, I then herd a clunk and the car then went into neutral with the revs hitting 8k. The question is have I done any damage? grumpy

Car is a 07 mk5 GTI

If the gearbox worked fine afterwards you haven't broken that, maybe slightly accelerated wear on the selector forks so don't make a habbit of it. Hitting max revs for a brief moment on power will not damage the engine, that's what the rev limiter is there to safeguard against.

I'm struggling to see how you could hit the rev limiter on a 50mph shift from 3rd to 4th though scratchchin

I dont know, I was on around 5000 revs in 3rd gear and then tried shifting to 4th, I got stuck in neutral and went into redline.

So you revved your car to 8krpm in neutral? Aside from poor driving, I don't see the problem?

If you accidentally slipped into 2nd then that would be a different story.

Bump for what - you want more opinions??

Answer A

Does the engine still run and seem just the same

Does the gearbox shift gears and work as it should

Yes to both and it's unlikely you've done any damage

Answer B

Sell it quick - you've ruined both the engine and the gearbox

PS a missed gear is way better than flat out in fourth and taking fifth and hitting third.... After that I had 3 gears in a 5 speed box (5 & R) one of the 3 working was reverse and that wasn't very good either - drove it like that for a couple of weeks till I found another box.

Your car will be fine. It revved high while you were in neutral because although you missed the change you subconsciously got back on the throttle and with the car out of gear it revved fast to the redline. Like others have said don't make a habit of it.

It might be worth changing the oil and checking the sump-plug magnet for swarf if you've seriously over-revved the motor. I once slotted second instead of fourth and buzzed an engine which didn't last much longer after that.

The trick is to be selective and not to overuse it (it's the first time I've seen it outside of the original thread). smile

Will have bounced off the limiter.

No need for worry. It all works fine now?

How many people need to say before you accept?
