Folks, brother's GF wants to buy him the above for a 40th present. She has a ceiling of £300 and would prefer Brands/Thruxton although Castle Coombe or Silverstone would be in scope. Any recommendations? Cheers.

I'd say have a search - this has been discussed a lot of times smile But based on my own experiences, I really rate 6th Gear Experience. Been on several experiences with them and they're a great bunch.

Porsche experience at Silverstone. You get 90 minutes constant driving with an instructor. Track is small but has 4 or 5 different elements to go through (skid pan, handling circuit etc).

Cost around £250 for a Boxster/Cayman, a bit more for 911's, but more again for GT3

Might not be his cuppa, but I did a Lambo experience at Silverstone and also a single seater experience and the Single seater was way more fun.

I wouldn't be doing the supercar one again, but certainly will the single seater again!

I did the Ferrari experience at Silverstone. Was alright, but I must admit I had more fun in the Megane Sport training cars.

Got a nice photo though!

From personal experience I think the Ferrari experience at Silverstone is overrated.
You really don't get much time in the car at all, far better to spend more time in something a little less exotic.

Single seaters are Silverstone and Donington are a good shout. Haven't done the exotic car thing personally but i do hear alot saying the Ferrari at Silverstone is overated and when on track at Donington in the Single Seater i was being held up but the exotics who were having to move over for me so that must have been annoying for them if nothing else..

£250 gets you 14 laps in a Cayman S and AM Vantage at Thruxton or alternatively a F430.

Option to have in-car DVD of your driving for a few more ££££'s.

Tiff Needell may be lurking too.

Went just a couple of months back and enjoyed the session. The pro's do actually coach you on technique and encourage you to enjoy giving it the beans - where and when appropriate smile

Of course, you're just getting in to the groove and the session ends!

I'd find out how much 'car time' you get before deciding.

I did a 6th gear one and got about five minutes in a Gallardo then got driven around in a Focus ST. Didn't feel like much of an experience really.

Thanks for the replies, looks like the Aventador at Thruxton is the kiddy with a bit of budget stretch, still, her money.

I'd agree with that. Plus when in the Ferrari they are rather militant in terms of acceleration/gear changes.

As mentioned, I had much more fun in the Renault training cars.

I've done Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens... Ariel Atom is so much more fun, highly recommend it.

I've never done one but I'd say she should book somewhere which has been recommended. It seems there are 2 types of these experiences, in one they make you drive like a granny, not letting you rev it etc, and other let you push the car a bit.

Hi, I can recommend thruxton. I did an experience there in june this year and thought it was really good. I was worried before about the instructors making you be precious with the cars but it really wasn't like that. I drove a cayman, then an R8, then a single seater. I found it quite funny on the R8 that they have a bit of tape on the rev counter hiding the last few numbers, the instructor didn't say a word when the needle disappeared behind it on several occassions wink

In all honesty though if you want to go somewhere good thruxton really is worth it, the track is fast and the instructors were really helpful and unobtrusive. I wouldn't recommend the single seaters there though, I think on the site they list them as formula renault cars and they aren't like any formula renaults I've seen. Still good fun to drive but they are rev limited and I would guess they are definitely quite old cars (the wooden gear knob being a hint). One tip is that when you book it, buy and book the experience day about a week in advance and you can get better "last minute" deals, rather than buying the voucher that you can then use to book any time in the next year.

ETA - You also might run into Tiff Needell, he takes people round for expensive hot laps in a yellow m3 and is there selling his books and mugs in the waiting room they put you in at the start of the day!
