Lorry speed limits to be increased to 60 on dual carriageways and 50 on single carriageways.

All weekend leave now cancelled at BRAKE and much beating of breasts and frothing of mouths at BRAKE Central.

Oh, the huge manatee...hehe

Meaningless exercise, at least on dual carriageways, none can (legally) exceed 56 and a lot of supermarkets limit their lorries to 52.

The single carriageway thing was already announced but I can't see what difference the dual carriageway one will make - HGV's can't actually do 60mph anyway as they are limited to 56mph which most of them already did on dual carriageways irrespective of speed limit?

PH 2014 in non-approval of speed limit increase shocker.

Great news as far as I'm concerned.

Especially if it annoys BRAKE and/or the regulars in SP&L.

HGVs in the UK have been subject to mandatory 60 mph (97 km/h) limiters since the early 1990s, which was subsequently revised to 56 mph (90 km/h) during EU harmonisation. Certain classes of heavy truck are subject to a further reduced 53 mph (85 km/h) limiter.
EU innit, and a lot of larger hauliers run reduced speeds to save fuel irrespective of the limits

BRAKE seem to be one of the few organisations unequivocally supported/staffed by utter s.

[quote]However, European Union legislation means the effective speed limit increase won’t actually be quite as impressive as it first seems: lorries are limited to 56mph by EU law.
from April 2015

56mph limit still in place but dual carrageways were never really the issue, single carriageways are! At least you wont be stucking doing 40mph on a 60mph becasue there is a hgv infront and no room to overtake.

Nope, now you'll be stuck doing about 50ish and it'll be more difficult to get past as the speed differential will be smaller.

Id rather be doing 50 with no gap to overtake than 40!

generally by the time i get behind a truck there are 5+ cars already there who dont know how to overtake or how much gap to leave to allow me to safely overtake them all.

brake have already campaigned for for most of the national speed limit single carriage ways round my way to be knocked down to a 50, which ironically gave trucks a speed limit increase.

Now they are going to be much more free to campaign for 50 limits because they no long will have the trade off the risk of the increase in speed limit for the trucks.

That's the whole point for the law change. Trucker acquaintances of mine have said that for year now, cars have been making dangerous, sometime almost suicidal overtakes on trucks on single carriage roads not realising the law. They think the trucks are taking the piss doing 40. By allowing them to do 50, everything will move along a bit smoother.

Good news, now just increase to 80 and 70 for cars with a motorway limit of 90 please.

The increase, up for discussion, was killed off by the frothing rage of BRAKE.

I'm truly baffled why these incompetent idiots hold so much influence with government.

Will the increase make much difference to the trucks MPG? And if significant will ultimately be passed on to the end user me thinks.

No. 4mph will make little difference to mpg. Lots of operators limit their vehicles down to 52mph currently instead of 56, with minimal savings seen in consumption.

The severe lack of drivers is another story though; that'll put prices up in the shops sooner or later.

Sorry, can't read any "non approval" into those.
