(Obligatory "yet another car suggestion" apology…)

Currentlh have a 9-3 Estate (and an A3 Sportback).

Have £16k to spend on a 2nd hand diesel estate, preferably from amain dealer (although aware the BMW example below isn't). Wife very keen on an auto, and I'd like a 3-litre.

Options I've narrowed it down to are:

F10 520d (eg http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
C6 A6 Avant 3.0 Quattro Tdi (eg http://www.audi.co.uk/used-cars/used-car-locator/a...

Is it worth having the newer BMW but with the lowly 184bhp 4-pot, or got for an older 240bhp A6?

The A6 2.0 TDI auto has the nasty CVT gearbox, the BMW has the widely-praised ZF 8-speed...

In two minds, appreciate any thoughts?

I would go for a 335 or 330 touring the Bmw 6 cylinder diesel is a superb engine compared to the 4 cylinder version which sounds rough in comparison ( make sure it comes with sport seats as the standard SE seats are not good).

Merc 3 litre oil burner is pretty impressive in 265bhp form.

Many thanks. Wife has ruled out a Merc (don't even ask…).

3-series is too small, but appreciate the 6-pot diesels are the ones to go for in an ideal world.

The question is (for example) - is an E61 530d better than an F11 520d for the same price?

Will check out V70s - thanks.

The F11 is a big step ahead in quality over the E61 plus the 8 speeder. But for for the F11 530d or more you'll want to pace.

Are 2 year old F11's 520d really that cheap? Geesus. That's good. And an excellent car.

That beemer is at Big Motoring World. You may want to google them before a visit.

After you looking at 520's, A6's people suggest 3 series, C class etc which is the next size down.

Have you sat in a E61? When you do and then sit in a F11 you won't go back.

Also look at newer Mazda 6 and Mondeo estates

That will get you a top spec skoda superb not 3 liter but auto, sat nav leather low miles. Bigger boot than a 5.

Only a 2 liter unless you go mad and get a 3.6 v6 4x4 one

Wife won't entertain a Subaru; still think they've a way to go to match the German interiors.

Going to look at a Superb TDI 170 - seems to get great reviews - but think I'd prefer a higher mileage Audi/BMW over a lower mileage Octavia/Superb.

Thanks for the tip about Big Motoring World.

Sounds like an F11 is the one to push for!

Can't recommend the n47 diesel it's one of the worst engines BMW have made for reliability... F11 is supposed to be an evolution of this, but seeing 2010 520ds with failed timing chains... the clock is ticking as is the timing chain on these later engines.

Due to the industry, Big Motoring World had acuminated a number of negative reviews online, and wanted to know of ways to get them pushed down the search results in an ethical way. This was mammoth task, and required a strategy that would work for them as brand reputation was key to their success.
Acuminated???

A quick Google suggests the post-11 models are better?

Any thoughts on the manual in a 3.0 tdi A6 as opposed to a slusher?
