BMW 330CI VS 330D Need Help Please
Discussion
Hello, i'm new to the forums and i found this is a great way to get help and advice
so please help guys
I have been driving a Fiesta St for a year now its a great quick little car, but now it's time to change
i have been looking into e46 330Ci / 330d i prefer the coupe look
i was looking to spend 3-5k 02-05 shapes i have been looking at
but the main question i would like to ask you guys
on the chiptuners.co.uk website ( http://www.chiptuners.co.uk/vehicle-performance-sh... )
They quoted the 330ci from
Standard : 231 Bhp
After : 245 Bhp
Standard Torque : 300
After Torque : 325
The quote for 330d :
Standard : 204
After : 234
Standard Torque : 410
After Torque:470
Looking at the Stats the 330d Is 11bhp less
but So much toque which will pull harder
Can someone tell me 0-60 times Compared to Both
which one will be quicker and what would you recommend
Thanks =)

I recently bought a 2002 330ci after trying several e46s, both petrol and diesel. Very pleased with it and would pick the petrol every time due to the nature of the power delivery and its engine/exhaust note. The diesel and petrol are not hugely dissimilar in terms of pace. A mapped e46 330d is likely to be faster than a mapped 330i, but like-for-like will probably be costlier to buy and maintain, excluding fuel. If you absolutely have to have your new purchase remapped, then the diesel is likely the one to go for as the gains are much more than with the petrol. The only way to get diesel-like gains from the petrol is to stick a supercharger on it at a cost of many ££££, and if you're going to do that you might as well have bought an M3 in the first place.
Whichever you go for, buy on condition and history. Check if common age and use related items been attended to (e.g., water pump, thermostat, front suspension, radiator checked for bowing). It may also be worth holding out for one with the right options. I bought my 330ci at the higher end of your price range but with under 80k miles, great condition, no rust and specced with xenons, Harman Kardon, heated seats.
There are plenty of threads here and elsewhere that may help your buying decision further.

Go with the petrol, I owned a 330d for nearly 3 years, six injectors and a turbo later whilst returning little over 30 mpg, wish I opted for the petrol... I loved mine, great allrounder, even made a decent noise for a diesel but be prepared for it to cost you if it breaks. Apart from cooling systems, suspension and rust there's little to go wrong with the 330ci...
I wouldn't trade in a Fiesta ST for a 330d if driving enjoyment is what you're after. I think they aren't brilliant and it's just the engines/interior that are nice for their time. I would never bother chipping a non-turbo car either any difference felt is usually sharper throttle mapping. Only exception is unless the throttle is deliberately restricted in the mapping like the petrol 1.6 Mini One.
Still try an E46 out and I'd go for the 330d instead of a 330i because it's so similar but more economical. Also get a test drive to see whether you're sure you're doing is the right thing as it costs a lot of money to change again if it isn't.
Also try an Mx-5 2.0 they start at about £5K now. Same basic engine as your Feista ST but RWD and it should be cheaper to run than an E46. I've read mixed things about the handling, some say they understeer in the dry too much and oversteer in the wet too much.

I was on a dyno day with a 204bhp 330d owning friend back when they were new.
It was not remapped but made ~220 on the dyno - and it seemed to be a reliable dyno, too. So the power difference seems to be negligable. It was a pretty quick car, too.
However, I would actually be likely to get the petrol. Not for noise reasons, but for reliability. These modern diesels are just not that good. Very expensive when they go wrong, too. That's from experience too.
You don't mention economy so, for weight reasons, again consider the petrol. If you're coming from a Fiesta ST (nice car, by the way), the massive diesel lump up front isn't going to feel great.
By the way, if you're the average driver you'll get 37MPG in the diesel and 27 in the petrol.

I've had both and I'd say it depends to some degree whether you want manual or auto. If manual go for the i, auto, the d - you might find it difficult to find a manual d.
Imho the 330i wins on 0-60 and smoothness, the 330d on overtaing ability imho.
That being said, mine were newer, so perhaps instead of mapping, save some cash for repairs.
Iirc 0 - 60 for the 330i is 7.0, 7.6 for the 330d. Both heavy cars, so I suspect the Fiesta would fel more nimble, though not driven one.

You'll have a much harder job finding a decent 330d for your budget as the cheapskates desperately want a diesel for the perceived economy. You should have no trouble finding a low mileage well looked after 330ci. For me everything about this decision is a total non brainer, unless you do 25K a year and haven't told us?

t. Very little gains can be had from non turbo engines.
