Importing salvage from the US?

Odd query, but it seems that whole, damaged/written off vehicles in the US are cheaper than their UK equivalents by quite some margin. (around 1/10 of the price for the models I've seen)
I'm just interested in the drivetrain so would happily sell off various undamaged components (which might even cover a significant chunk of the costs), and am not bothered, therefore, about any legalities and whatnot with getting the car back on the road.
Has anyone ever bought a scrapper from the US?
Would it be subject to normal vehicle import rules as it's not going to be registered here?
