Guys
I've got a choice of a 53 plate CLK55 125k or 56 plate S6 v10 116k

Former is approx half the purchase price of the latter but these questions keep swaying the decision left or right
A) never had a V10
B) audi has more power
C) merc has bit of bodywork to sort but "no rust" according to the owner
D) road tax is half ,on the merc !

Any opinions on driving/ owning either?

I've searched the forums but not a huge amount of info

Not driven either, but point a) is key - if you can, you must.

S6 V10 because it's an epic engine.

How is this even up for debate?

That generation of C class is incredibly dated now, and the Audi still looks fairly modern and has a Lamborghini derived V10. I can only imagine the C55 is much, much cheaper.

Are S8's cheaper?

Love a V10.

Ha ha I know what you mean the voice in my head always returns to a Homer Simpson style mmmm V10.........

The clk is 5500£ the S6 10000£

I know I will get bent over on both and I have milltek on speed dial to bend me over some more!

But I'm leaning way over to the audi camp !

At 116k on the S6 you may well be looking at some high maintenance bills so I would budget a couple of grand.

I've had my S6 for over 3 years now and think it's a cracking barge for the money.

A major service including plug change should be somewhere between £450 and £650.
Set of tyres is £600 to a grand
Front discs & pads is circa £600 fitted
I had to replace the oil separator on the crankcase breather system recently at £130. You can diagnose this by trying to remove the oil filler cap with the engine running, if it's really difficult you have a problem.
Also had my thermostat replaced which was time consuming but painless.

All in all mines been spot on over 3 years.

Ahh nice to know!

I've heard some gearboxes give some trouble by not responding when putting in to gear?

I'm going to get a milltek fitted and hope that doesn't cause any issues!

Talking about paying £10k for a V10 barge, then quibbling over about £50/year in road tax. Seems a bit odd. Might as well factor in that it'll cost an extra £1.50 at the jet wash too. Every little helps biggrin

Get the Audi, for about 50 different reasons.

Simon.

The s6 isn't as great as you may think.

An e55 is supercharged, a clk is not.

I'd go E55 AMG as it feels quicker than an s6.

The V10 is an incredible engine, no doubt. But I'd probably swap towards the Mercedes as a nicer thing to drive when you weren't thrashing it to hear the engine sing.

I thought the CLK was supercharged but the SLK wasn't?

I had a C55 and loved it but it was troublesome. Bought it on a whim but was surprised what a great car it was having never really been a Merc man.

I currently have a V10 S6 and it's light years ahead in terms of in-car tech and very secure in the current crappy weather.

I've upgraded a couple of bits on the S6 including the steering wheel with a Jack Royal special and a sports exhaust as the they are *soooo* quiet as standard and it's now getting close to a perfect winter daily driver (for me - YMMV).

Cheers!

Which exhaust did you go for.
I've put a deposit down on the v10 today just waiting on a date for an inspection. I'm working abroad till Christmas so relying on the RAC!

I believe the answer to this thread's question is 'yes', so I'd go for the Merc:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Shaving a few seconds off my A to B time is of little interest to me, whereas feeling involved and enjoying the drive is. Just as many, if not more people, feel the other way round, and there's nothing wrong with that, but this was a poll type thread, and that's my personal opinion: RWD is more interesting for me, personally. For me to be less involved is one step closer to taking the bus.
