As above, what manufacturer would you sell for? I did actually do this gig for my first career (now on my 3rd as an engineer) and in my 5 years in sales, I worked for MG Rover, Volkswagen and Chevrolet franchises. If I had stuck with it, I always saw myself eventually ending up at an Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz dealership but on reflection, some of their models are incredibly overpriced and others just pointless and stupid (X4, X6 anyone)? It also wouldn't sit comfortably with me, people stretching themselves financially on finance payments to own a badge!

I don't think that I would like to sell really high end stuff (Ferrari, Maserati, Bentley, Aston) etc, as I imagine that there can be some pretty quiet weeks in those dealerships. Also, I wouldn't want to sell anything like Vauxhall or Peugeot/Citroen/Renault, as I imagine you would need to be "giving them away" to make any significant sales and losing most of your commission in the process.

In hindsight, I think Volkswagen was pretty much the perfect brand to sell, as they had a good range of products both in terms of type of vehicle and price, relatively good residual values, attractive PCP/lease deals, good quality (at least perceived), pretty good standard specification and a slightly aspirational image, which meant that people actually wanted to own a Volkswagen and probably would if they could afford one (MG Rover struggled somewhat in this respect)! I would also be happy with any of their current range from Up to Phaeton as a demonstrator.

Skoda and Mazda would run Volkswagen close though. Both brands offer pretty good value with decent quality and good looks but the respective ranges are just a bit more limited compared to Volkswagen and I wouldn't want a Roomster as a demonstrator!

What you want is a brand that's going to grow. Audi 20 yrs ago would have been a good shout, as more recently Seat and then Skoda.

If it's a decent you're after try not to get too wound up with which cars you like.
JLR or Hyundai would be my view.
