...but not quite sure if doable. The OH and I have decided to sell both our cars and just get one, up to a max budget of £7,500.

Personally, I could have hundreds of cars from the classifieds in budget, but I've been given extra criteria for my search.

Her criteria:
Newer than 2006 - or if older, certainly be spec'd up and look newer.
Look nice
Not 'chavvy' or be generally associated with cretins and miscreants.
Probably more than 2 seats

Mine:
Decent turn of speed or fun to drive
Look ok to turn up to meetings in
Ok maintenance costs

So far, my only thoughts are...

Clio 200
BMW 130i
Mini JCW
Alfa Brera 2.4 JDTM
Alfa Giulietta 2.0 JDTM Veloce

What have i not thought about?

Fiat 500, or Abarth if budget can stretch.

BMW 130i is a good shout, out of those in the circumstances you describe it would be my pick.

An biased suggestion from me would be an FN2 Civic Type-R. Covers all your criteria, definitely worth a test drive.

Just ignore her, buy whatever you want and tell her it's a Fiat Accompli.

I'd say 130i

Pretty much a do everything car with enough poke and character to make it enjoyable. Fairly invisible as well, which is a bonus.

Or a 330i Clubsport? I quite like the look of them.

Alfa Romeo Brera all the way! I mean just look at it. If you can get away with two seats what about a Porsche Boxster or a BMW Z4.

Good shout, but I'd be wanting the newer looking one and they look a bit ropey for that money.

Didn't even think about the Abarth, great suggestion. Right on the money for the Mrs' choice too I reckon. Many around at 7k-ish?

Clio or an r26 megane. Ive had both a eunos and an impreza - the meg feels very similar to a classic scoob from the drivers seat.

500s are not for grown men (not driven an abarth tbf) - theyre hilarious in the same way a hire car is hilarious but i dont think id want to own one.
