im sort of half serious about this.
ive got some spare cash and plenty of garage space so what would you buy to tuck away but have some occasional fun with if you had up to 20k to spend?
sold my 993 12 months too early and values seem to have sky rocketed
mk1 & mk2 escorts - have the values topped out?
missed the boat on escort and sierra cosworths
so something not too rare with potential for growth.
on the list are...
mk4 rs turbo
clio v6
r26r megane
205gti
any classic mini in good nick
mk1 elise
mk2 exige

what else??

Much cheaper, but I reckon the Puma is a good bet to increase in value given the popularity of fast (ish) Fords. Anyone else agree? I have one that drives very well that I picked up for £400, but sadly the arches are so rusted that it won't be viable to keep long term. I guess many other are in the same state, so this in itself will push up values for the few that remain with less rust.

996, I can't see them getting much cheaper (famous last words).

Or VX220, prices have been pretty stable for a couple of years now and may even grow in the future.

V6 Clio.
V6 GTV
Renault Spider
BMW Z3 M Coupe
Can you get a Z1 for that money?
E39 M5
NSX is probably over budget
Tuscan
Tamora (might be possible)
Cerb

The list goes on and on, but you will need lots of space and a decent kitty to keep them in good nick.

996 engine horror stories scare me but you're right that they don't look like they could get any cheaper. Looked at cerb's in the past but patchy build quality and engines that seem to require a rebuild far too regularly for comfort!

Thanks for the comments so far!

I've been wondering about the same thing, I've got at the moment an E93 M3 convertible sat in the garage which I really don't use very much.
It's a really great car and lovely to take out with the roof down, but just half tempted to part with it and replace it with something that isn't appreciating and hopefully would be appreciating.

I nearly brought an S2 Exige about 5 years ago, I had a deal struck with an owner, it was going to be £17,500 with 16,000 miles on the clock needing a pair of tyres and a basic service. Stupidly I pulled out of the deal because I thought it was a bit too extreme at the time for me.
5 years later, the same car would be at least £25,000...bummer really.

I reckon an S2 would be a fairly safe investment - although in this case I don't really think £20,000 would stretch quite far enough

968 Sport or CS, or perhaps a Z4M coupe? The Z3M is already on the way up.

That's definitely a major factor in weighing up the options
Love Porsches buttery can be very expensive to put and keep right
Had a report done in a 968 sport which crystallised this view

Probably mutually exclusive frown Better to get something rare that is cheaper than earlier models of the same make. DB7 Seems to fit the bill.

How long do you want to keep the car for before it becomes an investment?

It seems too late for older cars now, they've already gone ballistic. Assuming prices don't crash as electric/autonomous cars take over in the next 10 years then perhaps the last of the rally reps and analogue cars of today would be good?

Any pristine, low miles versions of these for £10-£20k?

E46 M3
Elise S1
Impreza RB5 or P1 (if there are any left - RB5 on my lottery list when I can have 10 cars in the garage)
Evo Tommi Makkinen
Clio 182 Trophy
Focus RS Mk.1
Puma Racing

I couldn't buy a nice car and not drive it though, so none of this would work for me...
