Hard to provide a competent review of the current Superb as I've never driven one and although I've been in a few as a passenger I have never done so sober.

One thing sticks in my mind. The amount of interior space passengers have is spectacular. Mercedes E Class? Eat your heart out. No-one is ever going to jump into a Skoda Superb and say "not a bad motor but, know what? needs a bit more room.

Would I have one if it shows up on my company car list? Nope. Skoda snob? Nope. Problem with the Superb is it's just too bloody big. Big to the point of cumbersome. Big to the point of being a liability about town. Big to the point of being unable to fit in a supermarket parking space.

There's a new one coming out and guess what? It's going to be even bigger.

Taxi drivers love them. But they are pretty big for a cheap, chatty passenger vehicle.

I don't need all the space, don't even need half of it but to hell with the size, I love them.

Especially the quad exhaust, 155mph, 3.6 V6.

It's a fabulous car to be a rear passenger in.

Too big and brutally ugly.

I'd buy a passat.

Looking at dimensions on the web, it's narrower and shorter than a 5-series. People seem to manage to park them in supermarkets OK.

Saloon/Hatch is a Munter (an ugly assed car if ever there was one). The double hinged rear hatch was an aesthetic disaster. Estate was a far better looker and a car that, had I needed all that space, I'd have had over the Passat in a minute.

Its not big ! Even the wife manages to avoid things in it some of the time

Parking sensors front back and parking assist , its hardly difficult

and yes very much E class like we went from a W210 E320 CDI estate to a new Superb Elegance 170 CR 5 door (No estate option in 2009)

But yes bit ugly , when new it was commonly mistaken for a 5 series by the public , not sure what that says about the 5 series really but the w210 was no looker really , cant think of any Skoda that makes people weak at the knees in the looks department , but solid , well equipped , very nice to drive , much nicer ownership experience than the Merc and yes pretty cavernous. Copes with my now 6ft 4" 15 year old in the back for long journeys without complaints

Cross shopped with the A8, no comparison if you want good spec, drivetrain, engine. Skodas aren't cheap any more.

Same nav unit as my Passat CC and very similar inside. I would struggle with looking at the Skoda badge every day though... not because it's a Skoda but because its a horrible badge.

They're not that big really, at least not externally. My Jag is quite a lot longer and wider, and that's a car from before cars grew so not a big car by modern 'big car' standards. Try parking a long wheelbase BMW E65 7 series - they really are too big!

The Skoda's a lot bigger than my Jag inside though.

True we paid £22,500 for ours 5 1/2 years ago , similar spec will cost you £26,800 nowadays but still a hell of a lot of car for the money

In fact looking again, its not the same as my CC inside, just similar.

Looks VERY plasticky though! More so than the CC by far.

I think the front of it is a very handsome thing and I like the steering wheel a lot, I would have one anytime. The pre facelift is better looking though.

Isn't that the previous generation? I thought the current version did away with the funny saloon/hatch hybrid.

I think these are great. A guy I worked with had one and we did endless miles up and down the M40 in excellent comfort.

Also, he was big into his adventure sports and threw bikes, surfboards, sheds etc in the back no problem.

It is a little less refined than say, my dad's TT with the same 170 TDi engine but is genuinely fantastic.

Properly difficult to park in busy areas though

It's the new version (not out yet) that has a more conventional boot/hatch.

Just to make comment on the size thing again

The current Superb is narrower than the Passat CC, 5 series , Audi A4 and current Mondeo and is also a similar length to all of these albeit slightly longer than all apart from the BMW

As I said , hardly a struggle to park

A Skoda Superb estate parked next to me today. It is quite big, isn't it! It does look bigger than my old XJ6, but online data says it isn't confused
