Getting insured in the UK with a foreign license

I've currently got an Australian license, and my British one has expired. I've got a medical condition so have to be signed off by a doctor. The DVLA are a royal PITA to deal with for this (unlike their Australian equivalent), so I'm hoping to use my Australian license when I'm back over Christmas.
But this means I'll need to get insured on an Australian license.
Can anybody recommend an insurer who specialises in this?
The only quote I've been able to get is from Aviva, and that's running at about 20 quid a day: It seems a bit crazy that, as things stand, it will be cheaper to hire a car for 3 weeks than use the family run-around.
