What was wrong with the little switch that used to live in the centre console? Found myself stuck in some sand.

Unfortunately not, nor the Instrument Cluster setting menu - the owners manual failed to offer any insights either. Ended up being towed back to firmer ground by a local in a 10 year old Nissan Patrol.

I really like the advanced features (auto steering / braking) but it just shows how a far simpler car wouldn't have let us down in the same way. Any attempts to free ourselves where overridden by the cars computers. Hugely frustrating experience.

In a lot of cases you can disable it by pulling out a fuse (abs usually). Don't know about the S-Class.

In the Assist tab of the cluster options IIRC.

yes

That or a relay. Things like this and ABS are considered safety-critical so when you put it back afterwards, they tend to just self-test and work normally without crap like warning lights, which is nice.

@Foggy, no joy - Lane Keeping Assist, Steering Assist, Attention Assist etc. but no traction control option.

Wish I'd thought of the FUSE option at the time....

No next to the command controller there are Sport / Comfort buttons for both the gearbox and the suspension. The former allows the car to pull away in 2nd gear but the traction control still cuts the power if there's wheelspin

Hmm, OK, not sure then. I was basing my thoughts on the E class layout where ESP is an option on the Assist menu.
