Prompted by a couple of things. Firstly, related to a discussion I had with my girlfriend about interests & priorities. Secondly, I spotted this post in a recent thread -

I don't think you have the property to keep a car like that imho
For the purposes of the discussion, let's assume that the area in question is a nice one, semi rural etc.

I know.

That's missing the point.

Hence the title - you have two choices, which of the two do you choose?

I can't choose either, because I have a car which interests me more than virtually anything else and which is worth/costs very little money.

I'm not talking about your current situation, I'm asking what you'd pick given the above two choices!

Sheesh, this is hard.

In the absence of nice house, boring daily car, toy for play days.. I'll go with nice house first.

I love my cars, but they are a hobby not a priority.

Strange results so far given it's supposedly a motoring enthusiasts forum.

I don't buy into the house-is-my-castle thing, i could probably afford to buy a house that's twice the "value" of the one i've lived in for the last 8 years, but there's really no need unless you view a house as a status symbol. It's big enough, it's in a decent enough area, and i spend more on red wine every month than i do paying the mortgage

Having a house at all would be a big step up right now!

Not really though is it. You can be a motoring enthusiast without it being your financial priority.

Plus although your situation sounds great, I'm not sure it is representative of the majority. Particularly under-40's raising a family.

Well, the point is you don't need to choose. Money spent on a car frequently has no relationship as to whether it is boring or nice.

I can think of many expensive, awful, boring cars - in fact the roads appear to be full of them!

There is one choice, between two options!.

Or more accurately, I suppose, the second choice is to not participate.

I'd go for nice house & average, boring car because it's less expensive to change that combination to nice house, interesting car - assuming this is not a permanent situation.

Sold a Monaro VXR to extend my house. I've been driving sheds ever since.

Hoping to get back to something decent within the next year or two.

An interesting car doesn't necessarily mean an expensive car.

'Nice' houses are almost always related to price

FWIW, I probably already fall into the 'okay house' rather than 'nice house' category, and while I like my cars to be interesting, I don't spend loads on them. I do spend around 7 weeks a year skiing, go sailing and compete in various motorsports tho. The house is just somewhere to keep stuff and sleep.

I doubt anyone will be lying on their deathbed saying "I wish my house was bigger" or "oh if only I'd cut my grass more often"

I'd always strike a balance, but as someone said above "nice" doesn't have to mean "expensive" when it comes to cars. Most of the cars I'd most like to own aren't worth a significant proportion of the cost of even an average house around here.

I can't see myself ever spending a huge amount on a car simply because there's so many great cars which are cheap.

I live in small 2 bedroom semi-detached house worth about £120k. (It's also the only house in the street that hasn't had the wooden window frames replaced with pvc)

My current car is a 2009 Porsche Cayman S

My previous cars have been:

Lotus Elise SC + BMW 320d
BMW M3 (e46)
BMW M3 (e36)

I think that puts me firmly in the second category......

House first, always.

I like a spacious, well-designed environment with lots of amenities.

I also like cars but they are not a priority.

I do Consultant work for a Developer and we are working on a £4 million house now - the owner is a young chap who drives a VW Golf. He also likes cars and plans upon getting something very interesting in a few years but right now, he is putting every spare penny into his home. I subscribe to that way of thinking too - albeit on a far lesser scale at present!
