DVLA registration plate refund
Discussion
For Christmas she thought it was a good idea to buy me a personal plate for my car.
It more than qualifies for the bad plate tread and I don't want it at all.
I see the DVLA have a 10 day refund policy, but we're outside this.
The plate is actually registered in my name and not here. Although I only received it yesterday and it was a secret up to then.
Anyone had any experience of how the DVLA will deal with this? She's sent an email, buy obviously I'm not expecting to hear back soon at this time of year.
Cheers.

There is no value in the plate at all. The DVLA has a whole host of plates near enough the same with only the number different, which doesn't matter. If they've not sold in all these years, it kind of tells me that nobody actually wants them.
I'll just need to hope they show some understanding since it was a present, otherwise it will be lost money.
Normally she's quite good with presents too. She knew I did have a look at plates, but she also knew my conclusion was the plates were all very tacky unless spending vast amounts of cash.
I'm still feeling awful about it, but I'd feel uncomfortable having the plate on my car.

The DVLA did give a refund for the plate thankfully.
I still don't want to admit what it was though.
The only money out of pocket is the ridiculous price she paid for gel style plates to be made up.
Tried to be as nice as I could over it, but I'll deal with the cars, as usual, from now on.

I'm surprised by that, although it's arguably cynical that they allow purchases by other people, when any other enquiry would be met with a the usual "data protection act" stonewall. She then got the plates made up from an internet company with no proof required to buy them. The plates also don't have any maker's marks on them which I thought was a requirement.
Glad she's got a refund and the situation is over.
Wonder what I'll get now......

Probably an ex-girlfriend/ partner/ wife.Despite it being a gash present in your eyes... she probably put a lot of thought into it.
Sucking it up and accepting it with a "Wow... that's wonderful honey..." would have probably been the best thing do to.
Edit: Just try and see the whole thing from her perspective. ( And if she finds you have posted your relief about the whole affair on here.... it will make matters worse )

Going back a few years one of my mates gf's at the time bought him a private plate for his birthday. It was one she new he wanted so all good on that front. Did the same as your misses got them made up and wrapped them up as a surprise.
When he questioned how she had afforded the plate, can't remeber the cost but it was a good few hundred quid. 8-900 maybe. She was only working part time so alarm bells rang...
She replies don't worry I found it cheap online. Only cost 15 quid.
She was completely oblivious about the fact you had to actually buy the right to use the plate from the Dvla. And register the car to it.
She even said after she was going to get them fitted to his car so it was a bigger sunrise hahaha.
They are no longer together....

I would tread softly. It was a very kind if a litte misguided thought. At least she tried to find a different present. I find it better to have a softy softy approach in such situations otherwise resentment can fester. Hope all goes well but I do suggest caution. I still don't want to admit what it was though.
