Fun second car for 3grand or below..
Discussion
I've now got a 59plate Audi A3 diesel as a daily and after having two MX5's, MGB and a V8 Jag I am missing something I look forward to driving at the weekend.
It needs to be:
- Either a classic or old enough to qualify for classic insurance
- No more than £3000
- reliable or if it's a classic easy to DIY for a novice
- fun to drive.. Not really heavy, done the v8 barge thing
- Would like a ragtop but would be happy with a coupe
- ETA depreciation proof
So far contenders are MG midget and Porsche 924...

I had a 205 CTI (Convertible with a GTI engines) last year and absolutely loved it. No the quickest thing but great engine and fantastic with the roof down.
Iv'e also got a classic mini, cheapish still, classic insurance, can buy endless amounts of parts for them, fix them on your drive...just get a solid one.
I turned 1k profit on the CTI in 6 months and buy the right mini and you wont loose out either when you come to sell

CTI's are on my radar as our minis. Is it possible to still get a decent one for 3grand? Iv'e also got a classic mini, cheapish still, classic insurance, can buy endless amounts of parts for them, fix them on your drive...just get a solid one.

What kind of fun can you have in a £3000 Porsche 924 exactly? I'd go for a decent £1000 Citroen AX GT or similar all day long, install a cage, some sticky tyres, decent springs and brakes, exhaust and filter and strip it out for ultimate FWD fun!
Although not quick I understand they handle very well?E30 325i cabriolet? [/biased]

Good ones are increasing in value. Classic charm but modern enough to have electric windows, power steering and a decent heater. Easy to work on and mechanically solid (sold mine on 190k miles). Look out for rust - sills, arches, scuttle panel and battery undertray.

If you want fun it's hard to beat a mg midget! I briefly owned a ratty rubber bumpered one and it was the most fun car I've ever driven! So much feel through everything and it was really chuck-able, better to drive than a B. However it's ridiculously under geared and suffered the usual old british car problems. But it was a lot of fun for a small amount of cash.... Triumph spitfire is probably similar... Or there's the mk1 mx5...
