After a year of not owning a car the itch is getting stronger...

Looking at something that is fun to drive but realistically 85% of my miles are going to be motorway munching. It will also not be used during the week and needs to handle sitting on a roadside (leaves falling on it, occasional bird st etc.) 5-6 days a week.

It should be capable/fun enough for one or two track days and roadtrips to Europe. Ideally 4 seats and reasonable insurance. Previous car was a rusty MX-5. My other car is a bike.

Budget £2,500 (flexible).

Considering:
Prelude: but only interested in the 2.2 manual which is getting rarer and rarer.
RX-8: The £2.5k gamble. I can live with the poor fuel economy.
Not buying a car: don't "need" one and I'd hate to buy a nice example and see it deteriorate over a year or two.

Briefly flirted with the idea of 160SR, Renaultsport Clio etc.

Might get a reasonable EP3 Civic Type R if you can sift through some of the rougher ones first? Good fun and loads of room inside if you wanted to chuck a bike in the boot.

fk using a Clio for 85% motorway driving. They can do it but it's definitely not their strong suit.

Upon reading the title my first thought was something with lots of windows and a mattress in the back. Dirty bugger.

similar here, I have my 09 suzuki swift, worth around £3K

do maybe 3k miles a year now I get the bus to work in Manchester city centre

was looking at the RX-8 231bhp as they seem cheap, looked at the insurance, not too bad.

Then the road tax..................£500 per year, screw that !

The whistlful search continues

Def the clio sport 182FF (fine on the motorway) or Civic if you want the 4 seats, or maybe a 328/330ci BMW as another option?

For two seats, i would agree the MR2 turbo is great fun and can be damn fast! Mabe consider the Mk3 if you want finesse and reliability but with less speed and less motorway ability.

If you want something fun with four seats, how about a BMW?

I'm leaning towards a Clio 182 myself, fast fun, but still practical

I liked my gen 5 2.2VTi Prelude but I paid 900 quid for a lowish miles good condition car, I didn't realise they were commanding significantly more these days. To be honest the interior was pretty nasty and I don't see them being worth 2.5K to me unless mint.

I'd put my money into a Clio Sport, happy to sit around for most of the time and then thrash the pants off it at the weekend. Assuming it's your only car it also offer reasonable practicality in case you actually need to do something. A full fat 182 with a recent cambelt/dephaser should be available around your budget.

edit to add:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-Honda-Prelude-2-2-VTI-4WS-Manual-1-Owner-62-000-Miles-/361154949849?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item54168332d9

You'd have to be on drugs or a real Prelude fancier to pay that.

Ask yourself, 'Do I feel lucky?'

Well do ya?

1*2 is the no brainer.

I used to do Cambridge to manchester and back fairly regularly in a 172 and it was a st load more pleasant than doing it in my mx5 ever was.

Comfy version phase2 172 or 182ff would be my suggestion, cup models have really offensive seat fabric so are best avoided
